Who are the sports stars at St Mary's?

Leesa Lealai-Salanoa (national secondary schools discus champion), Susannah Lynch (national year 9 cross-country champion), Faye Waddington (Wellington rowing champion) and Alex Tully (premier club tennis player).

What are the popular sports?

Netball, rowing and touch. We're pretty strong in netball because we've got so many teams. We went to the national finals last year. Rowing is really strong; the girls go to the Maadi Cup.

What does the sports captain do?

I promote sport throughout the school and encourage girls to be active in sport. Each week or every second week, I talk in assembly. We have the Pride Tennis Cup coming up and, after that, I'll report back about how we did and which girls were really good. If we had girls who had competitions out of school, then we'd acknowledge them. I also tell them about what's coming up.

What are you looking forward to this term?

The Dragon Boating Festival (February 28). It's just a big social day and everyone gets to hang out and I get to represent St Mary's. If it's a good day in the harbour, everyone comes down. At our school, you can only do it in year 13. After that, it's our athletics day.

Tell us about your involvement in sport.

I coach netball and waterpolo, and I play netball and waterpolo. My netball girls won their grade at Hataitai and my year 9 and 10 waterpolo team came third on the table, which is quite a big thing for St Mary's.

How do you encourage people to get active?

At St Mary's, it's not really about getting into sport and winning. It's more like getting involved because it's such a hard thing for year 9s settling in at a new school. My main goal is to get those shy girls involved. We've got a couple of fundraisers. We've got a fun run and we're trying to get the whole school involved, even if you just walk it for 10 minutes. All that money will go to Haiti or a charity, or if we've got something like Stage Challenge it will go toward that.
