Young Wellington swimmer Cameron Jones made a huge splash on debut, claiming three gold medals at the national age-group championships.
Thirteen-year-old Jones, who attends Wellington College, won the 13 years boys' 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly, and the 50m freestyle in Christchurch last week. He posted Wellington long-course records in the 50m butterfly and freestyle.
Jones (Capital Swim Club) wasn't the only Wellingtonian to impress at the meet featuring 600 elite swimmers aged 13-18 years.
Tawa College's Nick Gillum, representing a small team of five swimmers from the Tawa club, wasn't to be outclassed. Gillum won four golds, including the 16 years boys' 200m freestyle, 1500m freestyle and the 200m and 400m individual medley.
Samantha Lucie-Smith (Wellington Girls) and Ted Taylor (Wellington College), both swimming for Karori Pirates, dominated their age- group freestyle races. Taylor won three 14 years boys' titles, while Lucie-Smith added three gold medals. She posted 17-18 years girls' national records in the 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle and 400 IM.
Emily McGill, from Chilton Saint James, cleaned up the 15-years girls' breaststroke races, with three titles.
Capital Swim Club coach Gary Hurring was rapt with the efforts of his hardworking medallists such as Jones, Ali Clareburt, Oliver Wyeth and Emma Robinson. Capital, for the first time, finished second overall on the club standings from 77 clubs. Wellington hosts the event next year.
