One down and two to go.

That's the approach the Mana College basketball team are taking after they beat Hutt Valley High 93-70 in the final of the Pohlen Cup last Wednesday night.

It was the side's ninth win from as many games in the College Sport Wellington senior boys' competition and saw the side successfully retain the cup they won last year.

"It was good to get another title," Mana College coach Randall Hippolite said. "It was our first goal and the next goal is to win regionals."

Although his side came out on top, they didn't have it all their way. "They shot the ball really well and made us panic right through until the last quarter."

The side's attention is now on the Central Region zone championships which began in New Plymouth yesterday.

A good performance there will be a confidence boost ahead of the national secondary school tournament, in Palmerston North from September 27 to October 2.

Also competing this week in New Plymouth are boys' teams from St Pat's Town, Onslow, Hutt Valley High, Wellington College, Tawa and Scots.

Meanwhile, in the girls' College Sport Wellington competition, Hutt Valley High beat Mana 83-67 to win the Sharp Cup.

For the Hutt Valley High team, it was their ninth win from as many games.

Both of those teams, along with Wellington East, Sacred Heart and Wellington Girls', are competing in the Central Region girls' competition which also began yesterday in New Plymouth.

In the junior competitions, St Pat's Town beat Rongotai 73-62 to win the Thompson Cup for the boys' championship and St Oran's beat Aotea 62-59 to win the Mayer & Toye Cup in the girls' competition.
