The new owner of the Hurricanes franchise - Hurricanes' Investment Ltd Partnership - is an entity led by Wellington Rugby (WRFU) and supported by private investors.

The franchise today became the first Super Rugby franchise to go into private ownership.

Fifty per cent of shares are now held by WRFU and 50 per cent by private shareholders.

The new private owners include:

Paul Collins: Former Hurricanes chairman Collins, representing Cohiba Traders, is a former chief executive of Brierley Investments, one of New Zealand's largest share market listed firms in the 1980s. Collins now runs private equity investor Active Equities, along with another former Brierley executive Patsy Reddy.

Gareth Morgan: Economist Morgan, representing Wellington Phoenix owners Welnix, is perhaps best known as the father of Trade Me founder Sam Morgan - and for helping save the Wellington Phoenix football team. Morgan early this year sold his $650 million KiwiSaver fund management business to Kiwibank.

Brian Roche: New board chairman Roche became chief executive of New Zealand Post in 2010. Before that he was a senior partner at accountancy firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Roche has had a variety of leadership roles with a particular focus on transport, treaty settlements, education and housing. He was project manager for the successful bid to secure the hosting rights to Rugby World Cup 2011.

Liz Dawson: Hurricanes board members Dawson, representing ForsythMorison, has a number of years' experience in professional sports administration and marketing. She was appointed to New Zealand Racing Board's governing body in 2007. She has worked with the New Zealand Rugby Union, the New Zealand Warriors, the Hurricanes rugby side and was involved in the successful 2011 Rugby World Cup bid.
