With proud dad Tana Umaga watching on, Scots College produced one of the great first XV upsets in a 19-17 defeat of six-time defending champions Wellington College on Saturday.
Umaga's son Cade plays No 8 for Scots while first-five Jackson Garden-Bachop is the son of former All Black Stephen Bachop, the school's assistant coach.
Scots coach Dave Meaclem said Umaga's presence on the sidelines was "inspirational" as Cade outplayed New Zealand secondary schools No8 Tupou Sopoaga. "The boys are absolutely stoked, thrilled," Meaclem said.
Scots shot out to a 14-0 lead after seven minutes and withstood their fast-finishing rivals in front of a huge crowd.
"Tana was there so that was a great thrill for Cade – it was the first time his dad had been back this season. Scots is not a traditional rugby school. At some point in time you know the kids are going to put it together, but I didn't think it was going to be on Saturday."
It was a big day for Scots as former student Victor Vito later made his first start in an All Blacks jersey.

WC Hoooraah!!
Tupou Sopoaga is not in the NZ Secondary Schools team. Might have a chance this year. His brother Lima is in the team. Good on Scots though. Great to see.

It was a brilliant contest! Great atmosphere, and dare I say it, the best team won on the day. Well done Col for being very gracious in defeat. The next meeting will be interesting... First 15 rugby at it's best.
