A sex shop advertisement featuring a group of churchgoers has caused more agony than ecstasy for the Catholic Church.

On a billboard ad for D.Vice designer sex gear, four parishioners are pictured in a church. Three have their eyes closed, hands clasped, praying but the fourth, a woman, is smiling and below her is a tagline describing a sexual aid and its price.

Wellington Catholic Archbishop John Dew said it was "unnecessary and distasteful" to associate a church with a sex shop device.

"It is an insult to anyone who recognises a church as a sacred gathering place for believers in God and a place of prayer."

D.Vice director Wendy Lee said the campaign and billboard in Cable St, Wellington, was meant to make people laugh and was not intended to offend. The firm's marketing spokesman, Rene Bros, said the campaign showed people thinking about sex while doing everyday tasks such as ironing, going to the bank or attending church.

The Advertising Standards Authority said there had been no complaints about the billboard.

where did you get the idea that an ad for anal beads would ever relate to children more than an ad for alcohol or cars or underwear .. I mean seriously , kids dont have thier own oney , so how would they even buy anal beads anyway .. It is up to the parents to say to the kids " now see that lady smiling .. well she is smiling cause she is praying or whatever they want to tell the kids

$55.99 is a bit expensive for Anal beads don't you think?

It's disgraceful to be so public about an obvious perversion. They (D.Vice) have no shame, they have been corrupted and consider it normal behaviour. I'm afraid that we're all on the "highway to hell". I

The Church's position is quite contrary to yours - they'd hold that such people have every reason to be there, for atonement and so-forth. Moreover, so-called Christian bashing is for fools; one's anti-Christian prejudice doesn't justify Christian-bashing any more than one's anti-gay prejudice justifies gay-bashing, or any other form of discrimination for that matter.

For Geofrey - Because the sort of people that enjoy themselves like that have no need to be at church! You've got to have SOME realism to adverts.

Nothing wrong with christian bashing. The only good thing about christians is that they aren't muslims!

What a disgrace. Why bother stopping there, why not just be honest about it and show a picture of her naked, legs in the air, with those disgusting things hanging out, and the focus on the price tag?

Once again we see adverts using Christian beliefs as a platform for bashing. I would like to see the same advertisers try using some Islamic shrine or Amam in their ads and see what happens!!

I see we have plenty of green-party voters posting....for environmentalists you sure are keen on empowering the sickos and disempowering parents (because breeding is bad for the planet right? ROFL).

If billboards like these proliferate I'm going to purchase a paintball gun.......

Very funny, why don't they have some rape victims we can all laugh at. How about some more God hating comments? Why not just show 5 year old's sex videos and maybe teach them to swear.

I think the advertisers here should be ashamed of themselves. They should be brought to account over this and any one else who think that this is all just a good laugh be brought up on charges.

How dare you.
