FOOLED: A fake Facebook post for actor Ryan Gosling has caused a stir with a prank post on Father's Day.

Almost a million Ryan Gosling fans were fooled by the ultimate dad joke on the American Father's Day holiday on Sunday.

One of the many unofficial Ryan Gosling fan pages on Facebook posted a photograph of the actor holding a baby, with a heartfelt message about the year Gosling apparently became a father.

"This father's day, I've decided to tell the story of how I became a father," the fake post started.

"This little guy was only 9 months old when I became his dad. His mom and I were great friends before she passed away from cancer. I promised her, I'd always look after him."

The message continued, saying Gosling stepped up to become the baby's dad, only to have the biological father fight him for custody and win.

"That 1 year of being his father taught me how to love unconditionally," the post added. "We have to stop and be thankful for our children and children should stop and be thankful for their parents."the biological father fight him for custody and win.

The post finished: "What I truly learned most of all is, every child needs love."

The fan reaction was huge.

Almost a million people liked the post, and it was shared more than 50,000 times.

There were more than 20,000 comments, many people saying the baby would be upset when he finds out the 33-year-old actor could have been his dad.

Samantha Tong wrote: "Lol I would never let my biological father live that down.... Whaaat you took me away from Ryan gosling!"

Facebook member Danielle Ruiz summed up the general reaction fairly well: "Man. ... he just made every woman's ovaries explode......"

Nicole Carter also hit the nail on the head: "Thousands of women just fell in love with you all over again."

Unfortunately for all the women whose ovaries needlessly exploded or who fell in love with The Notebook actor again, Gosling is not a father.

The account is, indeed, unofficial and as far as anybody knows Gosling has never had custody of a child.

Interestingly, a number of people commented that they'd seen similar posts on actor Bradley Cooper's page.

While the fan page that posted Cooper's Father's Day tale has been removed, or the post has been removed, one Facebook user posted a screen grab.

While the father myth is well and truly busted, who knows, Gosling might still have a child one day.

And for all the women in love with the Drive actor, unfortunately he is (probably) still in a relationship with actress Eva Mendes.

The pair have been together since late 2011, but there have been multiple rumours of a break-up this year as they are not often spotted together in public.

Prior to dating Mendes, Gosling was linked to The Notebook co-star Rachel McAdams from 2005 to 2007, and before that he dated Sandra Bullock.

While he doesn't have a child, people might be comforted in the knowledge that Gosling has a dog.

His dog's name is George, and I'm sorry to say ladies but George is the "love of his life".

"George is way more interesting than I am. I'd much rather talk about him," the New York-based actor told The Independent.

"Normally, I take him everywhere, I have special paperwork so he can travel with me wherever I go. Can we just talk about George?"
