Survivor's "nice guy" Robert Crawley has won the show's $1 million prize - but his only plan for spending the money is to take his wife on a long-awaited honeymoon.

Crawley, a 58-year-old physics teacher from Portland, Maine, won Survivor: Gabon's US$1 million prize after a close jury vote in last night's finale on TV3.

Crawley, who received a winning four votes, was up against Susie Smith (three votes) and Jessica "Sugar" Kiper (no votes) in the final.

A tired and raspy-voiced Crawley told Stuff.co.nz he planned on giving his wife Peggy a honeymoon after 28 years of marriage.

"It took Peggy a week to fly to the middle of Africa to be with me for four hours (on Survivor). We've been married for 28 years and I never took her on a honeymoon.

"What I'd like to do is take some of the money, put her back on a plane, take her back to Gabon, be a tourist and give her the honeymoon I never gave her."

Crawley said his biggest regret was being part of Randy Bailey's elimination.

"I was disappointed with was the way Crystal (Cox) and Sugar tried to humiliate Randy when he left. I was not a happy camper.

"I don't mind doing some things but I hate kicking people when they're down."

His only other regret was taking his shirt off too often.

"I've got back hair (and) my wife said, 'Oh my God you're so skinny - that's the last time you take your shirt off'.

Crawley said Survivor was like playing "an incredible game of chess with live chess pieces with a mind of their own".

"I think my strategy worked. Stay under the radar, fly low, try not to hit any trees while you're down there and try to be a good provider.

"What helped me was just being a nice guy. The other thing is you really need to be in good shape. I played like I was 25."

Crawley, who was known for making two fake immunity idols during his time on the show, said his arts skills came from his mum.

"I've got a bit of an artistic streak and I also have a bit of a kleptomaniac streak. I was collecting bits and pieces over time (and) I'd seen the previous season when Ozzy (Oscar Lusth) made a stick.

Ad Feedback

"I thought I'd do something better than make a stick."

He admitted it was one of the craziest seasons of Survivor to play, and he still couldn't believe he had won.

"You can't predict the game - you can't predict anything. (But) I'd do it again in a heartbeat. It was without a doubt a life-changing situation.

"It was like a boy scout camp only you got to cuddle with really cute girls when it was cold at night."
