BIG WIN: Kris Allen has won American Idol.

Arkansas college student has Kris Allen won the eighth season of American Idol, dealing an unexpected defeat to musical theatre actor Adam Lambert on the most popular US television show.

Allen, 23, who won over audiences with his all-American good looks and by putting his personal spin on popular tunes, appeared shocked as Lambert, a 27-year-old musical theatre actor, embraced him after host Ryan Seacrest's announcement.

"It feels good, but Adam deserves this," Allen said to Seacrest. "I don't even know what to feel right now, this is crazy."

A record high of nearly 100 million votes were cast in the finale. Allen's Idol win guarantees him a recording contract.

Of the two finalists, Allen was more clean-cut. A devout Christian from Arkansas, he was a newly married college student before landing on American Idol.

He often performed with his acoustic guitar, winning praise for rearranging well-known tunes, among them Michael Jackson's Remember the Time and Bill Withers' Ain't No Sunshine.

As recently as last week, Allen was considered a long shot heading into the battle for the top two Idol spots, but he wowed the show's judges with his rendition of Kanye West's Heartless, ousting early favorite Danny Gokey.

Widely considered the frontrunner since early in the season, Lambert dazzled audiences and the show's celebrity judges with his off-the-charts vocal range and dramatic flair.

With his falsetto singing style, black nail polish and daring wardrobe, Lambert earned the nickname "Glambert". Entertainment Weekly magazine even dubbed him "The most exciting American Idol contestant in years."

DARK HORSE

The low-key Allen, meanwhile, was often called a dark horse in the competition. On Tuesday night's final performance show, Idol judge Simon Cowell admitted that he had doubted whether Allen actually belonged in the finale.

"When your name was announced last week I wasn't sure whether America had made the right choice," Cowell told Allen early in the show. "But I absolutely take all that back now."

But later in the night, Cowell appeared to all but anoint Lambert the winner, calling him a "worldwide star".

The Lambert-Allen matchup marked the third time in American Idol history and the second year in a row that the show's finale has come down to two male contestants.

Ad Feedback

Highlights of Wednesday's star-studded finale included a joint performance between Lambert, Allen and surviving members of the rock band Queen. Also, judge Kara DioGuardi ripped off her dress to reveal a bikini in the middle of a singing duel with a former contestant famous for wearing a two-piece.

Other performers included Carlos Santana, Queen Latifah, Rod Stewart and the rock band Kiss.

"American Idol" began as a cheesy summer talent show in 2002 but morphed into a cultural phenomenon that attracts tens of millions of viewers a week to News Corp's Fox network. Ratings have sagged about 7 percent this season, but it remains the nation's top-rated TV show with some 26 million viewers.

American Idol has produced bona fide music stars from among its winners and losers, including country singer Carrie Underwood, Grammy winner Kelly Clarkson, rocker Chris Daughtry and Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson.

They both deserved to win due to the fact they both have their own flare. Adam came across as an all rounder and can sing any genre. He has adaptability (almost cameleonlike)can change his look to suit the era of song he is singing (Orsome), I see him as being the next Freddie Mercury. Kris I see more as a composer (behind the scenes kinda guy). I wish them both well

ADAM ROCKS... We've sat every Friday night watching AI and no-one - NO-ONE had the vocals and talent that ADAM has - it sucks he lost but we know he will still have an awesome career in front of him. As for Chris - hes just the boy next door compared to ADAM. He even missed a word in one of his songs on the night of the final and he takes away the winning prize???? GO ADAM!!

wrong guy won - real talent lost to the all american guy, hetro, young, reasonably good looking. Adam was robbed.

I think it's great that for the first time ever on Idol musicianship was chosen over "performance." I'd go watch Adam in a broadway show in an instant, but I'm hell of a lot more likely to voluntarily listen to something Kris produces. Kris plays the piano and guitar, not just adequately, but WELL which adds a slightly more credible element to the Idol franchise that hasn't historically been there.

Absolutely not... did America get it right - NO! This was a singing competition, nothing else - Adam deserved the win.
