The horror movie Hostel: Part II has been censored by New Zealand's Office of Film and Literature Classification for being too gory.

Hostel was directed by Eli Roth and was released in 2005. In it, people paid to maim and torture innocent people.

The sequel is highly anticipated by horror fans - but it won't be shown in New Zealand after the ruling.

New Zealand is the only English-speaking country to censor the film.

TV3 reported the board decided a scene in which sexual pleasure is derived from the tortue and murder of a victim would be "injurious to the public good".

After a controlled public screening, the board decided the movie could only be screened if this scene was removed.

The film's distributor, Sony Pictures, appealed the decision, but this was rejected.

Sony Pictures said it was not "financially viable" to edit the film, but an edited DVD version may be made available.
