Verne Troyer is reportedly desperate to find a copy of a sex tape featuring the Austin Powers star romping with his ex-girlfriend.

The tape, snippets of which were released by his ex Ranae Shrider to websites earlier this year, has resulted in two federal lawsuits and many news headlines.

But the tape has reportedly gone missing, and no one knows who has it.

Troyer needs a copy of the tape to copyright it and prevent its distribution.

The Los Angeles Times reported Shrider had sold the video for US$5000 to stranger - thought to be a private collector - who approached the aspiring actress outside her house.

Shrider's manager Holly Bannon told the Times: "He just said, 'Here's some money'. She just wanted to be rid of it so she said okay."

Troyer's attorney rubbished Bannon's claims: "Some guy just pulled up to the curb and gave her five grand? Was it in a paper bag? I don't believe this."

Troyer settled a US$20 million lawsuit last month with a porn distribution company and a broker, who agreed the tape wouldn't be made public.
