Ageing rocker Neil Young could be the headline act at next year's Big Day Out music festival, if rumours on an Australian website are to be believed.
Young, who has a career spanning more than 40 years in the music industry, will headline the 2009 festival in January, according to the Sydney Morning Herald website.
Other acts rumoured to be performing by the SMH include the Arctic Monkeys, The Ting Tings and My Morning Jacket.
The Canadian-born Young, 62, started out with with Californian folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield before teaming up with garage rock band Crazy Horse and then Crosby, Stills & Nash.
Having survived a brain aneurism three years ago, Young is throwing himself into his various projects.
This year he has encouraged more than 200 songwriters to send him their protest songs, which he makes available for download on his website.
His production company, Shakey Pictures, released the politically charged Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young documentary CSNY - Deja Vu and he has even had a trapdoor spider named after him.
The Big Day Out is New Zealand's biggest music festival, with more than 40,000 people attending this year's event in January at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland.
That event was headlined by Rage Against the Machine, with Dizzee Rascal, Bjork and the Arcade Fire also performing.

Bring back OffSpring man they havnt been here for ages they would rock BDO!!!
It is the same nearly every year - They put Iggy and the stooges on last and every at the back was booing !! Frans ferdinand where so much better than The white stripes.. And once again at the end of the night we will not all get to sing along to a kick ass band. Not saying Neil young does not have good songs - But the end of the show should go off with a bang. I was at splendour - last band Devo ! they played 'whip it' 3 song in and eveyone left early... it is a growing trend now at concerts to piss us off off - bring Back main headline acts -play the 60 year olds at 5pm - leave the rock off to peolpe that can still get their rocks off without viagra.!!!
M.I.A! she's the next big thing!
I was hearing more and more and more about how the NIN's would be comming but thought it would be too good to beleive! That would be INSANE! Also heard that Scars on Broadway were comming too, but I took that with a grain of salt. Still got my fingers crossed though. But Neil Young....hell yeah!
Quit slagging off NIN - anyone who has seen them perform in their own right knows that they are phenominal live - BDO performances are considerably shorter for bands that aren't headlining, so give them a break.
Bands who feature on the BDO bill have either just released an album or are just about to... that narrows the field down somewhat.
But I agree - about time Pearl Jam came back - they haven't been here since 1996... its been far too long.
BRING BACK RAGE
I can confirm: Neil Young will be headlinging 2009 BDO. Metallica will not bed, as they will be touring in the USA Prodigy are confirmed The ting tings are confirmed Foo fighters will not be playing Miss Elliot also not playing NIN...not in my crystal ball...but who knows ;)
Status Quo!
Keen to see spoon again. They were awesome this year year. The thing about BDO is that it is too crowded with 12-yo. I think having an old rocker there would be good, because not as many would show up. Who doesn't know Neil Young!!! Crazy. I hear MGMT sucks live. I think so so modern. synthgasm in the boiler room? Yes please.
