The British advertising watchdog has upheld complaints about posters advertising the film Wanted starring Angelina Jolie, saying they glamorised violence and gun crime.

One poster showed Jolie crouched holding a gun, while her co-star James McAvoy was also pictured brandishing guns which were directed at the reader.

Another advert, headlined "6 Weeks ago I was just like you" and with the text "And then I met her ... and my world was changed forever", also included pictures of Jolie holding a gun, including one image
in which she was firing the weapon.

The British Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said it had received 17 complaints about the posters.

The film's makers Universal Pictures said the movie was based on a comic book and the ads reflected that style.

They argued there were other ads which they believed were more graphic and less stylised than theirs.

However, the ASA ruled that the posters breached guidelines on glorifying violence and were unsuitable to be seen by children.

"We considered that because the ads featured a glamorous actress, action poses, several images of, or related to guns and aspirational text, they could be seen to glamorise the use of guns and violence,"
it said in a statement.

However, the ASA did not uphold complaints that the posters were offensive because of recent public concern amongst Britons over rising gun crime.

Somehow it doesn't surprise me - the poms have a complete handgun ban yet their rate of handgun crime is still increasing - so now they have to eliminate movies with guns in them.

O silly me, it was just the POSTER that was banned - because a still image is more destructive than 2 hours of film?

(And what about unintended consequences:the film is going to be that much more desirable because of the hype.)

When will the law makers realise that it is a VIOLENCE issue not a choice of weapon issue that underlies violent crime.

I don't think ownership of a gun is necessarily the best indicator of responsibility.

And if you reread my comment, I do say that gun laws in NZ encourage "responsible use of firearms".

What I was suggesting is that the language and arguments used in comment #23 to defend the appearance of a gun on a poster are reminiscent of the language and arguments used by the NRA in the US to defend their outrageous and anachronistic gun laws following every gun massacre.

This article is not about whether or not gun owners are responsible, and I don't make any moral judgement on gun owners - whether for hunting or for sport. In fact I reckon I'd probably enjoy a night down at the range.

It is about whether or not the British advertising watchdog was justified in upholding complaints that the poster glamourised gun vioulence. In my view it was, as the poster clearly glamourises guns - and I don't think that Angelina Jolie in the poster is waiting for her turn on the practice range.

NRA is America Steve, Pistol NZ is different, how about you go down to your local pistol club on club night sometime and meet some of the thousands of RESPONSIBLE law abiding gun owners who enjoy their sport like rugby, soccer etc. If anything people that own guns are more responsible than regular people like you.

Great - another NRA freak.

Guns don't kill people - People with guns kill people.

I agree that the word "offensive" is wrong, and that "irresponsible" would be better.

I don't think the gunlaws in NZ should be changed - I agree that they are strict enough and that it encourages responsible use of firearms.

But I also think that the poster does glamourise guns and gun violence, and I think this is unhealthy.

No wonder poms are bailing out of the UK in droves!!! ... this sort of crap is indicative of law by the loony-left and governance by emotional midgets!

Anyone else notice the similarity between the poster and the ad for the 'Chris Schulz's Hit List' blog on this website?

Agreed.

What!! To Philip and Charlotte, Angelina Jolie is hot, skinny chicks are hot and fat chicks are definately not!

Oh my god!! That's unbelieveable. It's a film for godsake.

What about all the kids cartoons these days, I'm not saying they're good or bad but they are much more explicit than that poster. Are they going to complain about the news next since it shows "things that kids shouldn't see" at 6 o'clock?!?!?

Anyway, the film is damn good and those pussies need to get over themselves before our countries become so weak that terrorists and unfriendly countries can do whatever they like because unlike our nanny states they produce people who deal with real life...
