The bogans have spoken, and they still like Metallica. Death Magnetic, the first new material from the rock act in five years, has debuted at No. 1 on the New Zealand album charts.

Death Magnetic, featuring the single The Day That Never Comes, has hit No. 1, pushing the Mamma Mia soundtrack down to No. 2 and Miley Cyrus' Breakout to No. 3.

It's a strong comeback for Metallica, who are making amends for their badly received 2003 album St Anger, and accompanying documentary Some Kind of Monster.

Death Magnetic has been well received by critics, with positive reviews from Rolling Stone and NME.

Stuff.co.nz reviewer Chris Schulz was less positive, saying the band had become a "pastiche" of itself in a two-and-a-half-star review.

"James Hetfield's lyrics are all over the place, an incohesive mess supposedly based around the theme of death," Schulz said.

"They are at best forgettable, at worst cringe-worthy."

His review caused an outcry from fans, with nearly 300 responses from mostly angry readers.
