Actress Hilary Swank has undergone surgery to remove a benign growth, and the two-time Oscar winner is recuperating from the procedure, a spokesman said.

"She was experiencing some discomfort and went to see her doctor, who prescribed an immediate course of action that included a brief hospitalisation to remove a small, benign growth," the star's manager, Jason Weinberg, said in a statement.

"Her condition has been resolved, and there are no continuing health issues, with the exception of some short-term rest and recuperation," Weinberg said.

He declined to give further details on the procedure.

Swank, 34, won Oscars for her roles in the 2004 Clint Eastwood boxing movie Million Dollar Baby and the 1999 transgender drama Boys Don't Cry.

She stars in the upcoming movie Amelia, based on the life of pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart.
