British bands the Arctic Monkeys, the Prodigy and the Ting Tings will join iconic rocker Neil Young to perform at next year's Big Day Out music festival in Auckland.

Also confirmed for the annual festival, to be held at Auckland's Mt Smart Stadium on January 16, 2009, are indie-rock act TV on the Radio, alt-country band My Morning Jacket, Aussie punk trio the Living End, and metallers Bullet For My Valentine.

Sneaky Sound System, Pendulum and Simian Mobile Disco are the dance acts that will likely heat up the venue's notoriously humid Boiler Room.

New Zealand bands are well represented at the festival, with Tiki Taane, the Black Seeds, a reformed Headless Chickens, The Datsuns, Elemeno P, Nesian Mystik, Ladi 6, Luger Boa, and The Naked and Famous scheduled to play.

The 2009 Big Day Out has also announced a new Smokefree initiative, marking the first time tobacco products won't be sold at the venue.

Tickets cost $125 plus booking fee, and are on sale from October 10 through Ticketmaster.
