The Flight of the Conchords not only cleaned up at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, they brought the house down without even being there.
Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, who are in New York filming their next series, won the breakthrough artist, best group, best album and the international achievement awards last night.
The other big winners were Opshop, who won four awards, including single of the year, and rock veterans Shihad, who won best rock album.
Unknown Dunedin band The DFenders, who were criticised for encouraging fans and friends to vote for them in the People's Choice category, missed out to Christian group Parachute Band.
But it was Flight of the Conchords, whose album got to No. 3 in the United States, who had the crowd at the Vector Arena in hysterics with four filmed acceptance speeches.
It began with a phone call to the pair on tiny beds in their cramped New York flat from their show.
By the time it came to the best group award, they were dressed like Rambo. "No way, not another one! Wow," said McKenzie.
"We're barely even a group," declared Clement. "There's only two of us," said McKenzie.
For the best album acceptance, McKenzie was on the phone to his mother. "Turn on your TV now, mum."
But Clement shook his head. "It's best album? I don't even agree with this one."
When it came to the international achievement award, they were almost homesick. "Um, wish we were there in Oakland ... Auckland," said McKenzie.
