Eighties heartthrobs Paul Young and former Spandau Ballet lead singer Tony Hadley have picked up at least two new fans on their current Kiwi tour - Auckland Zoo's resident elephants.
Hadley and Young were thrilled to get up close and personal with Kashin and Burma, ahead of their first New Zealand show, which was last night at Auckland Zoo.
"This is one of the most amazing things I've ever done. The trick is to be confident with them, because animals pick up on fear. They're a bit like big horses!" Hadley said.
This tour will be the first time the pair has performed live on stage in New Zealand.
"We did all our warm ups in Australia to make sure we got it right for New Zealand!" Young joked.
The Everytime I Go Away singer was here for a promotional tour in 1993 for his Greatest Hits album and Hadley was supposed to tour New Zealand 23 years ago with his former band Spandau Ballet - the Gold singer's not sure why he never made it.
"I don't know why it didn't happen. But I popped over to see Freddy Mercury and the Queen boys and ended up on stage with them and me and Freddy got slightly worse for wear!"
Their hectic tour (Auckland Zoo, James Hay Theatre in Christchurch on November 3, Wellington Opera House on November 4, TSB Showplace in New Plymouth on November 6, Rotorua's Civic Theatre on November 7 and Hawke's Bay's Opera House on November 8) isn't going to give them much time to see the sights here - with just one day off from their six-date tour.
But Hadley says they're hoping to make the most of the time they have, as well as making the most of New Zealand wine.
Three and half thousand people packed out the Band Rotunda at the Zoo on Sunday night to relive the eighties.

The Opera House was the perfect Wellington venue for these two lads, although my friend joked that with the hits they had under their belt, Westapc Stadium should have housed it! Ricky Morris was-ok. Always good to hear a NZ hit or two though, and his voice is still pretty good. He had nothing on Paul and Tony though, opening with Boys of Summer was priceless, they were two old rockers (or 'poofy 80's pop singers' as Tony put it) just having a great time. Their duets were covers ranging from soul to rock to pop, which meant they did their own hits (pretty much) true to how they sounded back in the day. Tony's voice was clear as a bell, I'd even call it faultless. Paul-well, bless, he tried hard, but his sheer stage presence and the fact he had double the hits Tony did carried him. I couldn't stop laughing the whole time. It wasn't laughing at them: although many may have laughed at me for going, I was merely absolutely carried away by how much energy and genuine fun both singers had together on stage. They didn't seem like try hards, nor like dirty old men, just two 80's idols, having a ruddy good jamming session-and it was well worth going to. If you can, go along to the New Plymouth or Rotorua gig- at the price we paid, I got more than I bargained for that's for sure! An 80's journey of epic proportions. Gold.
Wellington show was extremely entertaining - the crowd, especially the ladies, were going mental! Paul's voice was weakish in the duets but sounded great on his own material. Tony's vocal talent was exceptionally good. Hit after hit and with very good sound, it was just the sort of gig you could just unashamedly enjoy. "Cut a Long Story Short" (Spandau) was my highlight. They genuinely seemed to be enjoying performing which rubbed off on the crowd. Worth going to.
I went to the Wellington gig and it was a fantastic night of entertainment. The banter between Paul and Tony was great and they really engaged the crowd. Tony's singing really blew me. Paul was good on his own, but when dueting with Tony he paled in comparison. 9/10
It was such an awesome venue for the concert, and luckily for us, everyone avoided sitting in the concrete area's because they looked like paths and we got the best seats in the house - after turning up relatively late in the afternoon. Paul Young's voice definitely not like it used to be, and he did sound like he struggled, or had been on the booze and smokes the night before! Tony Hadley was amazing - voice was awesome and had everyone in the crowd going when he sang True and Gold. They did change the way they sang the songs a bit which throws you out when you are singing out loud the way they used to sound when listening to their records - but thats live music for you!! Fantastic night was had though!
Went to the Christchurch concert tonight and agree with first poster that Paul Youngs voice was definitely worse for wear and sounded like he was yelling early on. Tony Hadley still has a great voice and both are excellent entertainers
Yes I was there hahahaha memories!!!! Tony Hadley was brilliant he still has a great voice. Paul Young was good on his own songs but on the other ones he did not sound that good at all!!! I would like to remind all future concert goers that it is a concert and if people want to get up and dance then don't yell sit down!! Get off your butt and move yourself or go home and watch them on DVD!!!
Fantastic concert! Paul young has still got it with his sexy dancing and crazy speaker jumping moves. Tony Hadleys voice was amzing and I think has got richer with age. Even Ricky Morris was good value. The only problem was all the people that decided to bring their chairs and tables taking up all the space and blocking the view of all those other 4000 people who were sitting on the ground.
A awesome show ! Come back and stay for good Paul!
Yes, I was there. The last year has been good for me, a teen of the 80s. The Cure, Duran Duran, Paul Young/Tony Hadley, Def Leppard. I've jumped at the chance of seeing all of the them. Unfortunately, last night was a disappointment in some respects. I'm not sure whether it was the sound engineer's fault, but apparently Paul Young couldn't hear himself on the monitors for the first song. However, as the evening went on it sort of became apparent that Paul's voice isn't what it used to be; the power, range and general quality has gone. It was still good to see him again, doing the old hits. As he said partway through the evening, it was the first time he'd played over here - I wish he done it sooner. Tony Hadley still has a fine set of lungs though - put to good use on old Spandau hits, as will as covers including a great rendition of "Somebody To Love" by Queen. Ricky Morris was great in support, and Andrew Dickinson and Justin Brown kept the crowds amused between artists. All in all, a good evening. For any 80s fans reading, Paul Young, Tony Hadley and Pete Cox (Go West) are considering an album together - it would be interesting to see what Paul can do in the studio. 7.5/10.

I was there on Sunday and had a great time, Tony Hadley is still sex on legs and his vocals were amazing, Paul not so consistant but they had just flown around the world and i am sure the venue facilities may have thrown them a bit! He was still great and i believe he makes great fish pie. Being able to see quality entertainers like that in titchy cute venues is one of the best things about living in NZ, oh yes and the wine but Kiwis seriously stop having a pop at people dancing, THAT IS THE POINT OF A LIVE GIG!
