Writer Paul Theroux proud of his famous family
Paul Theroux is perhaps the world's most influential travel writer, but these days people meeting him want to hear about his famous family — nephew Justin and son Louis.
In New Zealand briefly after a 10-day cruise from Papeete to Auckland, Theroux said he had got used to being asked about his nephew, actor Justin Theroux, who married Jennifer Aniston last August.
"People say, did you go to the wedding? No, but I text him all the time."
Mention of his son Louis Theroux, the documentary maker, is also a crowd-pleaser, says the 74-year-old. "[People] are thrilled to meet me because I am Louis' father. There was a guy on the ship [who said], 'I can't believe this, you're Louis' father!' and took a selfie.
"How does that make me feel? So proud, so proud."
His other son Marcel Theroux's novel Far North was nominated for a National Book Award in 2009.
Promoting his latest travelogue, Deep South, Theroux said he thought his writing career had directed his sons in their career choices.
"Neither of them have a proper job. To that extent, I think I influenced them by showing them that you can make a living without having a nine-to-five office job."
He said he was lucky to have a happy, close family. "Justin is the same age as Louis, so they grew up together and they get on together. They're both very funny.
"Justin's extremely funny and Louis has a dry sense of humour, but they tease each other, it's wonderful to see. I'm lucky, I'm a lucky man."
