The Brazilian model who had her hands and feet amputated in a desperate bid to save her life has died as a result of her infection.
Mariana Bridi da Costa, 20, died early Saturday morning after battling the illness for weeks, news agency Associated Press reported.
The young model had reportedly been diagnosed with kidney stones before doctors discovered she had a urinary tract infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa - a rare type of bacteria known to be drug resistant.
The infection limited the amount of oxygen being pumped to her hands and her feet, forcing doctors to amputate.
Mariana's grieving father Agnaldo Costa spoke to reporters outside the hospital where she died.
"God is comforting our hearts because he wanted her to be with him now," he said.
"I can't accept that my daughter left us so soon."
The Brazilian beauty appeared to be on her way to a glittering modelling career, having made the final stages of the Brazilian part of the Miss World pageant.
