Oasis, Kings of Leon and Vampire Weekend lead the field of nominees in a transatlantic clash at the NME pop music magazine awards this year.

Britain's Oasis have been shortlisted in seven categories ahead of next months' awards ceremony, although the total includes best band blog as well as hero of the year and best dressed for songwriter/guitarist Noel Gallagher.

US rock group Kings of Leon are up for four prizes - best international band, best live band, best track and best album.

Compatriots Vampire Weekend are also nominated in four categories - best international band, best new band, best track and best video.

"Oasis and the rest of the UK acts have got some stiff competition from our US cousins," said NME editor Conor McNicholas.

"Kings of Leon, MGMT and Vampire Weekend prove that the American music scene is on fire right now."

Gallagher added: "Seven nominations you say? Is that all? I always knew my time would come in the best dressed man in the world category."

Among the leading US contenders for top awards on February 25 alongside Kings of Leon and Vampire Weekend are The Killers (best international band, best live band and best album) and MGMT (best international band, best new band and best track).

In the lighter categories, US President Barack Obama is up for hero of the year, and in the best dressed category Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner is up against his girlfriend, television presenter Alexa Chung.
