Hunt for the Wilderpeople was a top seller for iTunes in Australia and New Zealand - but no Kiwi music made it to the music lists.

Apple have put out their annual best of 2016 list, collating the most popular apps and songs on iTunes and Apple Music in New Zealand.

Unsurprisingly, Pokemon Go was the most popular app in the country, but it didn't make the most money.

That honour fell upon Spotify - Apple's direct competitor in the streaming music space.

In music, Lukas Graham's 7 Years was the most popular song on both iTunes and Apple Music.

Close behind were the Justin's: Timberlake with Can't Stop The Feeling! and Bieber with Love Yourself.

In the album chart, Adele's 25 reigned supreme, followed by Drake's Views, Justin Bieber's Purpose, and Frank Ocean's Blonde.

Blonde was an Apple Music exclusive, and Views was the first album to hit one billion streams on Apple Music.

No Kiwi artist made the most popular charts in New Zealand, but Apple's New Zealand editors picked the Broods album 'Conscious' as their favourite release this year.

Apple do not provide actual download numbers or monetary figures - just ordered lists. Apple take a 30% cut on App Store sales and a varying amount per download or stream of a song.

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Pokemon Go was the most popular free app for Kiwis on the App Store, and in the App Store more generally.

But even with the lucrative microtransactions built into the game, it came number two in terms of total gross revenue, with Spotify edging it out for number one.

New Zealand had a much higher presence on the top paid apps list - which charts the number of downloads apps that cost to purchase rack up.

NZ Driving Theory Test took out the top spot in this list, with MetService's weather app at number 3 and a splattering of games and face tuning apps making up the rest of the chart.

Taika Waititi's Kiwi hit Hunt for the Wilderpeople was number one on the top-selling list for iTunes New Zealand and made the list in Australia too.

It was the only Kiwi film to make the list, with blockbusters like The Martian and Bridge of Spies behind it.

Finally in the book lists The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson was the most downloaded audiobook, while Me Before You by Jojo Moyes was the top downloaded ebook.
