Warm, wet weather to dampen smorgasbord of weekend events

Locals will be spoiled for choice with a haul of events around the region expected under warm but wet skies this weekend.

For a full-on Saturday, see darn-near all of it by heading up State Highway 2.

Start at the Island Bay Festival then head for the Petone Rotary Fair in Lower Hutt, BrewDay in Trentham, Wings over Wairarapa near Masterton, and then hit the Art Deco Festival in Napier.

But take a jacket. By-and-large the weather will be warm in the mid-20s with light winds, but a north-easterly will bring occasional showers developing later in the day throughout the bottom half of the North Island.

The Island Bay Festival has run for 32 years, showcasing the talent and diversity of the South Coast.

The nine-day summer festival is held every February with three main event days; The Parade & Variety Show, The Day in the Bay and the Ribble Street Races. 

  • When: 10am Saturday for Ribble St Races. Yoga on the beach starts 7.30am Sunday.
  • Where: Ribble St on Saturday and Shorland Park along Reef St on Sunday.
  • Free entry. $2 for trolley racers.
  • Weather: Occasional rain turning heavy into the afternoon with a light wind and a high of 23C.

Held in Martinborough the last five years, BrewDay is expanding closer to the city with a 16-strong selection of local brewers and cider makers including Upper Hutt's own Panhead and Kereru breweries.

Specially designed suds include the bittersweet Parson Bird Pohutukawa Gose​ from Wild and Woolly, made with 2kg of New Zealand Christmas tree flowers; and the Malty by Tiamana, an alcohol-free stout that's perfect for designated drivers.

When: Saturday 11.30am – 6.30pm.

Hutt News Petone Rotary Fair 

Touted as the Hutt Valley's biggest summer event, you will find plenty of shopping on Jackson St along with cafes, pub and bars. Being the 26th year for this event, the Petone affair is expecting more than 35,000 people, 300 stalls, and all money raised will be returned to the community through the Petone Rotary Club.

More than 40 other charities and community groups use the fair as their major fundraiser for the year, which provides visitors with a wide range of fairground-style entertainment from children's shooting galleries to hot dogs and home-made goods.

Wings Over Wairarapa 

Feature drawcards of the 2017 airshow are the debut of the Royal New Zealand Airforce's Black Falcon display team and two world record attempts by the UK glider aerobatics team, Glider FX. The team will make a run at the maximum number of aerobatic rolls whilst still under tow, and the maximum number of rolls descending from 5000ft.

Rain forced organisers to cancel events over Wellington Harbour on Friday afternoon.

A decision about Saturday's airshow should be made by 8am but everything should be moving ahead as planned.

  • When: 8am Saturday and Sunday
  • Where: Hood Aerodrome in Masterton
  • Entry: $50 – $60
  • Weather: Light rain for Saturday turning heavy. Sunday mostly cloud with a few showers.

 

Art Deco Festival 

For five days every year Napier, is transported back to the 1920s and1930s.

Highlights include the Saturday street party, with vintage car parades, flight displays, music and dancing in the streets as 40,000 visitors fill the Hawke's Bay region.

Sunday highlights include the annual Soap Box Derby from 10.30am with children and parents racing carts down Napier's Tennyson Street. Followed by the Gatsby Picnic along Marine Parade from 1pm with visitors bringing their finest china for the public picnic.

  • Where: Parade at Clive Square. Other events held across Hawke's Bay region.
  • Free entry to parade.
  • Weather: Saturday overcast with evening showers and a high of 24C. Sunday cloud with some showers and a high of 24C. 

 

Kapiti Coast's Express Day 

The region's first close-up look at the $630 million project before the cars start running.

Kapiti Coast's Express Day will let people explore a 5km section of the new four-lane road between Paraparaumu and Waikanae, north of Wellington.

The day will include bus tours, entertainment, food trucks, and expert speakers. The expressway will open to traffic before the end of the month.

  • When: Saturday 10am – 3pm.
  • Where: Access via Te Roto Drive, Paraparaumu, and Te Moana Rd, Waikanae.
  • Free
  • Weather: Occasional showers, possibly heavy, with light winds and a high of 24C.

 

Round the Bays 

This year's event - Wellington's 40th - will see 14,000 Wellingtonians running, walking, dancing and skipping Round the Bays from Frank Kitts to Kilbirnie park.

After selling out, organisers ordered 500 new bibs, and 50 per cent of proceeds raised from these entries will go to the Christchurch Disaster Relief Fund.

  • When: Sunday from 7.45am.
  • Where: Frank Kitts Park. 
  • Cost: $32 for a 6.5km fun run or walk.
  • Weather: High of 24C with a light breeze and occasional rain.

Karapoti Classic

Based in Wellington's rugged Akatarawa Ranges, this is the who's who of mountain bike races and the longest-running such event in the country.

This old-school adventure ride features a 50km classic to the 20km challenge and the Kids' 5k race.

  • When: From 10am Saturday, first runner home expected soon after 12pm
  • Where: Karapoti Park, Upper Hutt
  • Cost: $30-$100
  • Weather: 24C with a light wind. Occasional rain could turn heavy.
