The work Object of Desire 2010 is one of more than 60 works by Kiwi artists featured in the Shapeshifter exhibition at Civic Gardens in Lower Hutt.
"I know nothing about art but I appreciate it simply for the wonder of people's imagination and ability," said Richard Lamb, from Woburn.
The steel and corrugated iron sculpture depicting a mother and child, with a price tag of $11,500, is by Hannah Kidd from Franz Joseph village.
Indoor exhibitions are also being held at The NewDowse, while the former Tutukiwi Orchid and Fern House has been converted into the country's first "living gallery".
The exhibits are for sale with proceeds going to Lower Hutt charities that serve the arts, the terminally ill and youth.
The exhibition, part of the New Zealand International Arts Festival, continues until March 21. Entry is $5, with accompanied children free.
