Toxic?

Last updated 08:26 18/08/2009

So the people - that's you all - have (apparently) spoken. And the song is Toxic, the Britney Spears track.

I am referring of course to Friday's absurd challenge - which I seem to have completely and utterly done to myself. Someone wrote to me and said "I've read that blog four times and I can't see how you ended up in that position: you totally set yourself up. You have only yourself to blame." It was not an encouraging email to receive. But it does appear to contain aspects of the truth.

Mic CheckWhen Katy and I sat down on Thursday night to write that dialogue/blog-post we did not have it in mind to discuss Singstar. Oh - and to the early commenter on Friday who said "Les Paul dies & we get a blog about Singstar, come on Man!" - please note the use of Thursday night in that sentence above. I too was sad to hear about Les Paul dying when I woke up on Friday morning - there's your link to some info about him (just click on his name there). And here's a eulogy that someone else wrote.

Do I sound a tad defensive?

Well that's probably because I have agreed to sing Toxic (here's Brit's version by the way). And I have agreed to sing it, using Singstar, something I am not good at. (I am not good at singing - in any way, shape or form.)

And when I say agreed - perhaps we should look at the way it all fell into place.

I am guessing that it's Toxic - by the way. I believe it bumped out Outkast's Hey Ya! by some margin. (I've no time to write Les Paul eulogies much less count through all 125 comments!)

So, I asked you to vote for the song. And I said we need to get 117 comments - picking a number at random.

I never agreed that 117 comments in total would instantly mean I would be singing. You had to use your vote by leaving a comment. Some of you chose to whinge about the death of Les Paul (sad as it is, he was 94!); some of you told music jokes and then, some of you broke another rule and started posting multiple entries and thinking yourselves just hilarious by writing things like "nearly there people"; "what's that?"; "I said we're nearly there"; "Yeah?"; "Yeah!"; "I thought that's what you said"; "Yeah, I did..." and so on...real funny, people!

At one point, scanning through some of the comments I see that Katy has commented. What?! She got me in to this mess to begin with - she mentioned Singstar!

Some of you even voted for songs that are not on Singstar.

All of these should be instant disqualifications.
Toxic!
But I am a man of my word - as of today anyway. So I will be doing this. I will be singing Toxic (unless anyone cares to count up and prove that Hey Ya or We're Not Gonna Take It gets the win).

As well as writing this blog I tend to hold down a job most days - or will do until this damaging video of me destroying this song circulates. So I am posting this today to let you know that I won't be recording myself dying-for-YouTube today. I won't be doing it tomorrow. And I won't be doing it this weekend. But I will do it soon.

And don't worry, I am not buying time. I will not start practising. (It wouldn't do anything anyway.)

I might give it one run-through before we film. I think that's fair, right? And I might go to the library and get this for a listen.

But it won't help.

You are doomed to hearing the worst singing of your life. I should run and hide - but this is the internet so I know you'd find me. At least you do get the chance to click the button and ignore it. Or to write a comment reinforcing just how bad it is.

Don't say I don't do anything for you. The laughs are going to be on me, at me and about me.

We'll aim to have it posted within a couple of weeks. Just wanted to let you know.

We actually do think we're funny. I know that a lot of people were getting a giggle out of elevating the post count, because when someone sticks his head in the noose so easily, it's very difficult to resist tightening the rope.

And I bet there's a part of you that's loving this. You know you can't sing, we know you can't sing, you've warned us multiple times, so the resulting YouTube vid (and don't think that we won't forget about it as time goes by, getting you off the proverbial hook), as cringeworthy as it may be, will still be a triumph in a certain Wing-way... although to be fair, you KNOW, as I said before, that you can't sing. What a joke it will be on us all if you actually can... a possibility that hadn't occured to me...

In any case it could be worse. The song could have been one of your ABBA favourites from Mamma Mia. Maybe, to help yourself feel better and vent some vitriol, you can blog on that at some point :)

Watching you perform/butcher Toxic will be as awkward as watching the video of Dancing in the Street. Yuck.

Yay! I'm glad you are going to nuts up and sing, and also glad you have plumped for Toxic, which I voted for.

Just be grateful you're not doing anything from the Singstar Queen disc - I had a tilt at a few Queen songs with friends on Friday night and it makes you realise just what an incredible set of pipes Freddie Mercury had, and how dismal our efforts sounded by comparison.

I feel a bit bad about you having to do this Simon. It was fun to watch the posts pile up and there was some pretty funny stuff in there. I for one wouldn't be offended if you declined to do this as we spent a lot of time double voting and telling jokes.

How about posting a vid of your best drum solo instead? Maybe not. Being compared to Keith Carlock would be a bit tough for anyone without freakish, super human skills. Ms Spears on the other hand is a mildly talented singer, with a knack for self promotion, so that might be the easier road after all.

To be fair, Britney can't really sing that well anyway, so at least you have a fair show of making a go at it with your song 'choice'!!

I was soo gunning for Hey Ya. But I'm sure Toxic will be just as awesome....or not.

Will you be dressing up?

Don 1   #7   11:33 am Aug 18 2009

Can we expect a costume? Something sex-ay?

Simon Sweetman   #8   11:52 am Aug 18 2009

@ Don 1 I am planning to speak to Dwight's Canvas about 'letting out' the gold pants I wore when I was 8 that Katy likes to constantly reference...

We will see. Open for suggestions...how do you dress for eternal humiliation? T-shirt and jeans has served me well, usually...

MsM   #9   12:04 pm Aug 18 2009

Please just promise you wont be wearing the costume she is in that pic above. As hilarious as it would be I'm not sure I can stomach seeing you prance about in a costume made only of flesh coloured mesh and rhinestones...

I think that if Simon is going for humiliation, then it must be total (nothing personal Simon, but you did sign up for this).

So, in the words of Don1, you need to be dressed in something sex-ay.

Understand MsM's concerns, but hey, that's entertainment.
