I am (still) the only one who thinks...

Last updated 09:55 22/06/2012

Last year I wrote a post called I am the only one who thinks...that line would be repeated in bold with a different opinion-snippet to follow. I was sure I was the only one around who thought that Jack White had a thin, horrible, reedy guitar sound. I was the only one around who thought that though Bob Dylan's Time Out of Mind was ace, everything that had followed wasn't worth worrying about. I was the only one who didn't get the fuss over Fleet Foxes (or Crosby, Stills & Naff). And, yeah, well you can click here to go back to that post.

All just a bit of fun, of course.

But sometimes there are thoughts you have relating to music - and you feel like you're the only one. Maybe you're best to keep them to yourself, of course. Raving about Phil Collins' debut solo album has got me into a lot of trouble. I'm apparently a huge Phil Collins fan. Not true. But I love that debut album, right time/right place. It still stands up well.

Sometimes you feel a certain way about a band or artist or album or song and you're baffled to hear and see almost everyone go the other way. That doesn't matter, of course - but it's weird, right? I think we should celebrate those thoughts - be proud to have your opinion. I bought a Grateful Dead live album after reading a review calling it the worst thing the band has done. I love it. Still. To this day, it's a favourite. Same deal with J. Mascis' solo acoustic live album. Not a favourite-favourite - but I bought it after reading a review that awarded it half a star. That reviewer was (occupational hazard of course) clearly an idiot.

We should feel proud of how we feel and what we think - and be pleased to have our own opinions. There's no reason to feel shame as a music listener/consumer. Unless you're a fully grown adult and you like Justin Bieber; that's something of an issue. You should see a doctor. Allow me to recommend this doctor.

So, let's have another round of I Am The Only One Who Thinks That...

I'll list mine here if you'll list yours below. And you can take me to task. Or you might agree completely. But please list your examples too - what baffles you, what are you alone in thinking? Are you similarly underwhelmed by the constant love thrown at Dave Grohl for his perfectly adequate drumming? Maybe you too are sure the only U2 album worth hearing these days is The Unforgettable Fire. Do you also think that Fiona Apple is nothing special at all? I do. I really don't get the buzz about her. She's not without talent - but she should just take a ticket and join the back of the queue.

Maybe you think all NZ On Air funding should be scrapped. But feel free to just throw it out; whatever you are thinking. You might think that Pink Floyd only got good when David Gilmour took over. You might be the person that waits for the 20-minute drum solo at gigs; is gutted when there isn't one.

There are no wrongs or rights here - well, that's not true at all. But there's only what you think is wrong or right. Stand up and have your say - and see how it goes down.

Here are some of my new I am the only one who thinks... opinion-snippets. Share yours in the comments below.

I Am The Only One Who Thinks That...Nick Cave has had a great run - and for most of the last decade he's been coasting at best. His time is up; his ship will be called in.Paul Buchanan: Mid Air

I Am The Only One Who Thinks That...the best album of 2012 is Paul Buchanan's Mid Air - call off the search, nothing will beat it.

I Am The Only One Who Thinks That...the second-best album of 2012 is Locked Down by Dr John (it would be the best if Paul Buchanan had waited another year to release his album). And those lamenting the good doctor of old: c'mon man, the dude is 71. At least he's not done a Tom Waits.

I Am The Only One Who Thinks That...the reason Lulu was so awful was because of Metallica rather than Lou Reed. Reed wasn't great - but he hasn't been great for at least 20 years. Okay, that's a bad way to phrase it as Metallica haven't been great for at least 20 years either. That said, if Reed made Lulu with whatever is left of Sonic Youth it would have been a much better (and better-received) album.

I Am The Only One Who Thinks That...I got it spot on for calling out Lana Del Rey as a vacuous fraud and talentless transmogrification early on; she will be forgotten this year.

I Am The Only One Who Thinks That...the new Dirty Three album is the band's finest.

I Am The Only One Who Thinks That...NZ On Air's new Making Tracks scheme doesn't stop the funding of awful music - it just addresses the fact that awful albums shouldn't be funded anymore.

I Am The Only One Who Thinks That...saying you don't like Led Zeppelin without having listened to all of their albums is moronic.

I Am The Only One Who Thinks That...a review comparing Flight of the Conchords to Lennon and McCartney is ridiculous to the point of being embarrassing.

I Am The Only One Who Thinks That...the new Bobby Womack album is an unlistenable embarrassment. Leftovers and lazy "treatments" on a voice that's been wrung out to dry; a desperate attempt at the elder statesmen "comeback album with celebrity producer/s" that isn't actually all that easy to do (well).

Robert Glasper Experiment: Black RadioI Am The Only One Who Thinks That...this blog is (almost) always so goddamn positive.

I Am The Only One Who Thinks That...the new Van Halen album is a kickass rock record; the best rock record released this year.

I Am The Only One Who Thinks That...Damon Albarn is a genius but he's finally spread that cleverness too thin, this is the year he comes unstuck; the backlash gathers steam and finally it (probably) has good reason behind it.

I Am The Only One Who Thinks That...you should really go and buy, borrow, beg for or swipe the new Robert Glasper Experiment album to soundtrack your weekend. Get it now. Today. Right now. As soon as you've added a comment to this blog below. It's sublime. The double-vinyl is the way to do.

I Am The Only One Who Thinks That...Jeff Beck absolutely kills it with this version of a Lady Gaga song (well, no one in the audience watching seemed to think so).The Blue Nile: High

So there you go. Some of my thoughts. And thoughts I'm sure I'm alone in. Back me up, or shoot me down - and in and around the flaming please put some of your own thoughts out there as well.

Happy Friday. Have a great weekend. My favourite album to revisit this week has been The Blue Nile's High. I wrote about it here already. But that album is a beauty. I love it. But then, I Am (probably) The Only One Who Thinks That.

Am I the only one who wants an update on how the book Simon is supposedly working on is going?

Sometimes I feel like I am the only one who doesn't like ANYTHING U2 has ever released...they're just so boring!

Let's just get something clear - there's no such thing as a good live album.

No Simon pretty sure it was Lou Reed that made Lulu sound awful. Metallica sounded pretty tight to my ears.

Am I the only one who thinks every Foo Fighters song sounds the same?

Wake n' bake   #7   10:36 am Jun 22 2012

Am I the only one who thinks it's hypocritical to praise Dr John at 71 while claiming Nick Cave and Tom Waits should call it a day...

Agree about Van Halen being awesome. Agree that FOTC being compared to Lennon/McCartney is stupid! Agree about the Led Zep noobs. They are possibly the most timeless rock band ever! You can't "not like" them. You're not totally alone SS. Am I the only one who thinks that Judas Priest invented Heavy Metal? Am I the only one who likes Carcass AND Katy Perry???? Am I the only one who thinks that 21st Century Breakdown was waaaaay better than American Idiot? Am I the only one who thinks that GNR did NOTHING good after Appetite? Am I the only one who thinks that after 20 odd years STILL no one has topped Nirvana? Cool blog today SS.

I am the only one who thinks that Adele's 21 album is an absolute waste of time, and the songs on her 19 album are ridiculously good.
