A very short post today - but one that offers a chance for FOUR lucky readers to win a copy of an excellent documentary.
Madman has recently released the DVD of the superb documentary Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest. The film was made by actor (and now filmmaker) Michael Rapaport.
I've already written about the film - click this link to go back to my summary, no point in repeating my thoughts word for word. I consider it one of the best music documentaries I've ever seen.
I'll reiterate that this is a film that should be fascinating and engrossing to non-fans - because it's about the life just as much as it's about the beats and rhymes; or you could say it's about the beats and rhymes (and riddles) in life as much as it is about the beat, rhymes and life of just this one band.
The film displays all that is wonderful and awful about watching a band progress, triumph and implode. Then of course - these days - bands will still re-form even if all of the pieces have not been correctly put back together.
The film shows the fragile - difficult - egos involved in the creative process. And the film features some stunning, innovative music. So of course it's a no-brainer for fans of A Tribe Called Quest.
No need to say any more today - just a chance for four people to win a copy of this excellent DVD.
So - write in - tell me why you should win. And I'll pick five winners - by the end of today. Five people will win a copy of Beats Rhymes and Life - click here for the trailer.

Great story all around. Even more intriguing when I saw them play in Melbourne 2 years ago and their performance was totally flawless. Absolutely no body language of any the members indicating the apparent still existing conflict between themselves. Party rocking was the winner over beef on the day! Would love a copy bro. Chyeah.
I'd like to win because I'm a huge fan of Michael Rapaport - especially his work in such quality fare as the Eddie Murphy vehicle, Metro and the scientifically accurate Deep Blue Sea.
I also built a shed on Saturday.
Well apart from never seeing this DVD, it looks amazing! Would like to add to my collection. thanks :)
Oh cool! I'd love a copy because, well first off I love Tribe, and I guess that's the most important thing. I was invited by my brother to see the film when it played at a theatre here in Wellington but I couldn't make it, which was a bummer! Also it would be great for a review on my jazz and hip hop radio show. Cheers!
I'd like to win, because I missed out on seeing it at the film festival and have regretted doing so ever since.
Having grown up on the likes of the mighty Wu, Biggie, Nas (and of course those classic West Coast G-Funk albums). I probably first heard 'Can I Kick It' on a mixtape someone made me at highschool - you gotta love that Lou Reed sample with the drum loop! But the 1st album I actually heard of theirs was 'A Low End Theory' - this of course led me on the hunt for more 'Alternative' hiphop groups and also take a greater appreciation for Jazz music. In my opinion those 1st 3 albums will always be regarded as classics (they just don't make beats like that anymore!) - and Q-Tip is still still banging out some great tunes , the dude definitely knows how to move with the times! I missed out on seeing this film at the Wgtn film fest last year, so would appreciate a copy being an avid fan (I see you bopping your head to the beat at SFBH on occasion Simon!)
Wow the preview looks very well produced.
A Tribe gets a lot of playtime on my iphone. Definitely One of my favs alongside Nas, Black Star, Lupe Fiasco and The Beastie Boys. Would like to check out their story and hear a bit more about their inspiration.
I am not Osama Bin Laden.
Now we have established the fact that I am NOT a terrorist, I would also like to point out that I am a fan of a Tribe Called Quest.
Pick me pick me pick me pick me!!
P.S. Simon Sweetman is good on the spoons (but not as good as Spoons Perry).
