Bands with fans I hate

Last updated 10:23 31/08/2012

You can't love everything. I'm not only dubious about and suspicious of people who claim to not hate any bands, I can't value their idea of liking a band, if they like everything - or say that they do.

I've always maintained the list of bands I love is longer than the list of bands I loathe - and in a sense that's true. I've focused on music that inspires me, that excites me, that means something to me, when writing Blog on the Tracks. But there have been occasions where I've written about a band or artist I despise, like this post here, about Billy Joel.

Sometimes more annoying than the bad band is the fans of the band.

The word fan is a shortening of fanatic - so of course you're always up against it if you are seen to "attack" a certain band. Trust me; I was physically threatened over a review of Tommy Emmanuel recently. It was a fairly harmless (and hopefully accurate) review I thought (accurate, in that it was my opinion, I admitted I was in a minority). And in other lifetimes, or so it seems, there have been angry letters of protest by fans of Donny Osmond and Amici Forever. And a few others.

So that'll happen, sure.

But it's not the fans that put me off Donny Osmond's music, or Amici's muzak or Tommy Emmanuel's stunt-busking. The musicians do that job for themselves; it's just not the proverbial herbal cuppa tea for me. And that's fine.Muse

But what about bands that you absolutely cannot like because of their fans. Here's five for Friday. See how you go. Maybe we agree, perhaps we don't. Be sure to add your own bands with fans that make you hate the bands below.

Queen: I've written, previously, about my battles with Queen, its music, its fans - and it comes down to the over-the-top hero-worship of Freddie Mercury as music's great frontman, singer and songwriter. Was he talented? Sure, absolutely. Was he the greatest? He might have had an exciting moment or two. But Queen will ultimately be remembered for a Freddie Mercury impersonator who tours the world leading singalongs, the two members of the original band who just don't know how to quit - literally. And the over-zealous fans. Actually in the case of all three it's the fault of the fans. There is a Queen album I like - but I can't go on record liking the band (beyond that one record). And that's your fault, Queen fans. You're making fools of yourselves - and you're kidding yourselves if you think this band has any lasting influence. Apart from, erm, Mika. And Muse. How can the band feel good about that? That means, among the Queen fans to hate are Mika and the members of Muse too - double points there.

Muse: Apart from the obvious - this century's Queen-derived pomp-parading prog-lite dreamers - Muse almost doesn't count here. Because it's easy enough to dislike the band for its music - inverted commas can be applied for almost everything this band attempts: "theatrics", "spectacle", "intensity", "songwriting". But its fans are a special case. And indeed a special breed. You've got to watch out - be careful wherever you go and however you tread. Muse fans can sneak in with the humans!

Animal CollectiveSix60: It's one thing to not pass NCEA - it's quite another to not be able to even spell it. (See here and here.)

Animal Collective: If I want to hear a version of The Flaming Lips that lacks any charisma and occasional pop-hooks, then I can, these days, just listen to post-Yoshimi Flaming Lips. That Animal Collective fans make it even easier to mock the catastrophes of colliding cacophonies that Animal Collective hides behind, in place of actual music, gives just another - vital - reason to not engage with this band's nearly musical activity. (You don't really need that given the band has members with names like Geologist and Panda Bear). I went to an Animal Collective gig once. I was surprised to find that I had only been once. For everyone else there it was like a second coming. A giant big communal second coming. Have you seen that movie Jesus Camp? Okay substitute the Harry Potter-hating Christian extremists for washing machine-hating cardigan wearers and we're almost there. Trade pitchfork-brandishing for Pitchfork-reading and the result is every bit as disturbing. You could film the audience of an Animal Collective gig and post the results, sound turned off, no music. People would praise it, just as they did Jesus Camp: "Wow, what an incredible documentary! Frightening - but has to be seen to be believed." Etc.

Pussy Riot: All them brand-new fans demanding that all the gigs be free!

Okay, that one was just a joke - so, on a more serious note...Sigur Ros fans, probably

Sigur Ros: The music is not transcendent, nor is it even ever-so-slightly magical. It's just rather boring, really dull and that made-up language, "Hopelandic"? You might as well tell your parents you're going to be a poet as soon as tell them you own a Sigur Ros album. Talk about colossal disappointments. It was okay for one album (almost) but beyond that it was taken way too far. And the people taking it too far are the fans. As always. Also, it seems, even Sigur Ros don't really like their own fans - look!

There you go - five for Friday: bands that I can't get on board with because of the fans. I don't hate the bands as much as I dislike the fans for being far too excited/excitable. So do you agree with some of these? Or do you have other examples of bands you can't listen to because of the fans? Maybe you've been able to push on through even though the fans of the band almost give the group a bad name (Radiohead!).

What bands have fans you hate? What bands have fans that (help) put you off the music?

I can understand not liking a band, but I don't understand why that results in hating the fans.

For example, I despise Justin Beiber, but while I think his fans are morons, I don't actually *hate* them.

I suspect that when you think "fans", what you actually mean are those who are true fanatics - who eat, drink, and live their favoured band's music, who follow them to every possibly gig, who obsess about who's dating who.

Now me, I call myself a fan of Queen. Hold up - see? You've judged me already. Personally, I think Queen's era ended with the release of the Queen Rocks album, and I haven't really paid attention to Brian May or Roger Taylor since. I'm not happy with what they've done in the last 15 years.

I also think Queen was a very unique, stand-alone band, with their own style which didn't lend itself (much) to influencing others. I think they had an excellent run, and now their time is past. I still enjoy their albums, and still listen, but I don't consider them current.

So Simon, do everyone a favour and stop just generally hating fans. Be more specific, and consider that it's really the music you hate. The fans will always be part of that, but that's not a reason to hate them.

Bon Iver - waaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh My god, fans of his can wank on about him...his voice is so amazing, its so awesome how he wrote an album in a log cabin, oh he's so in toucvh with his feelings about his ex.... waaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh. I hate him and his music because of the fans,.,. its whiny as.. made worse by hipsters pretending to know stuff about singing in falsetto? they must have read that word on pitchfork somewhere.

and to be fair, most indy/hipster wankery guy with a plad shirt and a beard on stage with an acoustic guitar.

Disturbed ... why can't the fans understand that it is just terrible music? Seriously that band is absolute utter rubbish (so bad I don't feel the need to emphasise my statements with swear words). There is also the problem that a lot of New Zealand bands suffer from, people only like them because they are kiwi's. Most of their music is rubbish, but they are celebrated because they are locals kids - Feelers, Zed, Dave Dobbyn, and that pop-rock band in the late 90s with that blonde chick singer, just to name a few.

Ben Harper fans used to put me off as they seemed too enamoured with their perception of his image, rather than the music. When I asked which songs they liked, I just got the same old 2-3 tunes I already knew in response.

Jesus, where to start? The Smiths, U2, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Metallica, Radiohead...the list just goes on and on.

Tool and any other band whose fans response to not liking the band is that you dont get, oh i get it, i just dont care and dont want to listen to it (muse probably fall into this category too).

dimebag fans, sure he was a good guitarist, but nothing extraordinary, and had horrible tone.

fans of black sabbath who think ozzy is god and dismiss anything after he left as rubbish

THE SMITHS FANS ARE THE WORST.

I think Queen were great....over the top, but great. BUT....I do get your point about their fans. It is sometimes hard to admit I am one of them. See, I am a Queen fan, but not one of THOSE Queen fans. And I also think that when FM died, that should have been the end of it. I also like to rock out to AC/DC occasionally when I am in the mood. But I am not one of those bogan, woodstock and cola can drinking AC/DC fans. The one artist who I really have been put off by the fans? Elvis Presley! Some of those fans are nuts, obsessive, refuse to believe he ever took drugs, insist he was a nice guy, wholesome, church going blah blah blah. Be honest, he was a guy who made some great records in the 50's, then turned into a fat slob druggie who died on the toilet.

One thing I do take exception with though....I am a Muse fan. And when you start knocking Muse, or their fans, THEN YOU HAVE REALLY CROSSED THE LINE MR SWEETMAN!

Tool fans. I'm not sure what the band sells more of, t-shirts or albums?
