Dallas Green records under the name City and Colour - you see his first name is a city - Dallas. And his surname is a colour - Green. So that's the gimmick. Green's voice soars - check out We Found Each Other In The Dark from 2011's Little Hell (a great album). He's released a handful of albums under this alias since 2005. All of them worth hearing.
When everyone was excited about Bon Iver I couldn't see the fuss but I loved listening to City and Colour. I got what I needed from that. Coldplay turned to mush so quickly, Elbow has always seemed perversely overrated, Sufjan Stevens just became too annoying, Grizzly Bear, well, yes and no - still, I got what I needed from City and Colour.
I dig this song The Grand Optimist. And this one, Little Hell.
Green has also been a member of Alexisonfire - a different prospect to City and Colour (see here for their song, Boiled Frogs).
Tomorrow night City and Colour plays a show in Wellington at The St James Theatre.
Green doesn't just record and perform as a solo act, City and Colour is a band, the line-up is fluid, but it's very much a band offering a band-sound.
Here's a full set for you to check out.
I reckon it's going to be one of the best shows of this year - okay, so time is running out to make that call and all but I really think this could be something quite special.
And so I'm very thrilled to be able to offer a double-pass to the gig, one lucky Wellington-based reader can win two tickets to tomorrow night's show.
Just tell me in a comment below what your favourite City and Colour album/song is. And why you want to go. I'll pick one winner.
Any City and Colour fans out there? Anyone seen the band live before? Or planning to get along to the show, have you bought tickets already?
