Guess what! Being gay is not interesting anymore.

It's not exciting or facinating or witty or clever.

It just IS.

In the same way that being straight just IS.

Back in the 90s being gay was like belonging to an elite international club. It was a bit of a deal. And I can remember being with gay boys who were sniggering about straights and how uncool they were.

It's hard to get excited about swine flu. Way more people have died on the road, and kipping on the sofa for that matter, than have died from swine flu, since it was launched with great media fanfare onto the world and I think we are all sick to death of the scaremongering. CNN commentator Jack Cafferty noted that 13,000 people have died from the "regular flu" so far this year in the US, compared with just one confirmed swine flu death.

That's NOT fair!

I wil never forget an old boyfriend telling me years ago, that the best advice his mother ever gave him was "Life's not fair".

She was dead right. Life is NOT fair. Life is a complete bitch in fact, and what happens happens. Get on with it!

This can be really difficult to accept though and I think the reason is that, as human beings, we are pack animals and have evolved a complicated system of cooperation. "Fairness" is part of this system. Children seem to know this inherently. We have all heard them whine that something's "not fair".

And as a dog owner I firmly believe, from observation, that they have this sense of fairness as well.

I was really fascinated, then, when results of a study into this very topic were released in December last year.

Fashion freaks

You really have to wonder sometimes, don't you, where fashion is headed.

"Way out" has always been around. Macaronis in the 18th century were laughed at for their ridiculous clothes. If "alternative" existed back then, they were it.

They wore  tall, powdered wigs with long curls and used monocles and were generally pretty full-on visually. And pretty awful. Then in the 19th century, extreme fashion had collars so starched they carved into flesh and corsets that could kill. And in the 20th century, an example of alternative fashion is the crazy outsized, clown-like zoot suits favoured by Latinos in the US which looked stupid beyond belief. But none of those nutty fashions comes anywhere near to what alternative fashion gives us these days.

To be alternative and to get attention these days, you have to look really out there.
