Brittany Murphy on screen

Last updated 10:11 21/12/2009

Brittney MurphyWow. This is not as much of a shock as the death of Michael Jackson, but Brittany Murphy's death from cardiac arrest still came as a bolt from the blue. Here's a link to a Huffington Post comment.

I grew up watching Murphy - first in Clueless, which I, like, totally loved as a girl, then when we were both a bit more grown-up, films like Girl, Interrupted8 Mile and Sin City, and then there were the dire "comedies" such as Little Black Book where we parted ways.

She also voiced the character Luanne on the C4's King of the Hill cartoon series and lent her voice to Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs. As a C-list Hollywood celebrity, she also recorded a song and turned up at random events and fashion shows.

Her death at the tender age of 32 of cardiac arrest (same cause as MJ) seems to reek of drug use... which is sad, especially given her denial of cocaine use and assertion that her biggest vice was caffeine:

"Wow. No, just for the record I have never tried it in my entire life, I've never even seen it, and I don't leave the house too much, except to go to work," she said. "My worst vice is caffeine. [The rumor of cocaine use is] really pretty darn far-fetched - it couldn't be further from the truth. I have known people over the course of my life that have bad problems with drugs, and it's something really serious."

She was a poster child for the inate hotness of brunettes. Shame she had to dye her hair blonde to get her break into movies.

No one dies of a heart attack at age 32 with her figure unless they have a heart condition, an eating disorder or a drug problem.

It sucks. I really liked her, and her song "Faster Kill Pussycat" is a hot song on my iPod.

I'll be interested to see what else comes out about this. Do healthy 32yr old women die of heart attacks? I don't think so. So keen to know what the "unhealthy" part was that set this off.

I think it's devasting news really... it always seems to be when someone famous dies. I grew up with Brittany Murphy - like Michael Jackson it all just feels a bit surreal really.

I think there was always something mysteriously intersting about Brittany Murphy - even in her tacky comedies...

I too am very intersted to see the reasons for the cardiac arrest. it is such a shock and I totally agree with Paul's comment... although I couldnt help but think her death was drug related when I first read the words 'cardiac arrest' I guess only time will tell. Such a shame..

I think it is so sad that someone so young and talented has passed away. I have heard of young people with unknown heart problems, and have died unexpectedly as a result of it. Yes Brittany was a celeb. and even if she had been in the past addicted to drugs, or had some kind of eating disorder, (which hasnt yet been proved), it is still an extremely sad loss for Hollywood. My heart goes out to her family. Brittany Murphy's Movies have been a big part of my life, along with MJ's music and Heath Ledger's Movies, and for me in the last couple of years, its strange how fast we are loosing them! All I can really say is Rest in Peace Brittany, and Thank you! xx

I heard this morning that her hubby doesn't want doctors to perform an autopsy. Whether or not this is true, who knows. I think (THINK!) that her family has a history of heart conditions but not too sure.

Murphy was awesome! A very talented artist. I loved her in Spun, if no one has seen it you gotta check it out! She plays a strung out crack head having a fling with Mickey "cook" Rourke and plays the part sooooo well!!!

She actually looks stoned in this picture. I bet she was using cocaine. She was always so little.

"C list Hollywood celebrity"? Wow, that seems unfair and harsh given the fact that Murphy was a talented actress who starred in some successful movies and a couple that were even cultural touchstones (Clueless, 8 Mile, Sin City). Hardly a C lister given the fact that the bulk of her work prior to the last few years was pure Hollywood A list material. A C lister would be somebody famous for being famous type.

I don't think she looks stoned in this picture. Is there a statement that's been made that she was on drugs? I hadn't heard that. I think "caffeine" in itself could cause a heart attack - it's really bad for you. I do not drink it, and try not to eat much chocolate. I do remember her movie, Little Black Book and it was cute. Sorry to hear of another celebrity passing.
