Spider-Man returns to high school?
Now here's a tarantula-sized newsbite that'll leave Spidey fans bleeding.
According to the latest LA news from AP, Tobey Maguire is out as Peter Parker and Sam Raimi won't be returning as director when Spider-Man 4 hits cinemas a year late in 2012. The plan is to go with a new story, new director and brand new cast.
Raimi said his work on the previous Spider-Man films was the experience of a lifetime, but acknowledged the studio was heading in a "new direction".
Sony Pictures said in a statement today that the movie was supposed to hit theaters in 2011 but has not yet gone into production amid rumors of trouble on the set.
Sony said it would have more news about Spider-Man 4 in coming weeks. The new movie will be based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on Peter Parker in high school.
So I guess the hunt is on for the new Zac Efron only with Tobey Maguire-esque qualities rather than tap-dancing skillz ...
Let's hope it's more successful than Spider-Man the Musical...

I know it's weird, right? Especially since the first three films established that PP got his powers right near the end of his final year.
So I guess Hollywood's going for the retcon. Again. *sigh*
Oh oh oh - Flicks finally has the A-Team trailer!

Although Liam's accent sounds a bit dodgy...
yay!!! Spider-man 3 was arse.
Are we becoming desensitised to the complete lack of coherence in modern film making?
Rebooting a series that is less than a decade old strikes me as being supremely stupid. Why not just make a Spiderman Babies movie? Or animate it? Or you know - stop kicking the dead horse!!
Maguire was always a crap choice for PP.
What's up with Hollywoods obsesion with prequels at the moment? Don't they realise people are getting tired of them?
Coming soon to a cinema near you: Scary Movie -1
The main cause of the split seems to have been Raimi's refusal to bow to pressure as to what characters (and thus what story) to use - and if the Spidey-3 mess is anything to go by the studio should have learned to leave Raimi to do things his way.
As it is, the whole reason Sony is ploughing ahead with the project is to prevent losing the rights - which means any chance of Spidey doing a crossover in Marvel films is still a long way off.
I suspect the replacement director will be one the execs can puppeteer by committee and the new film will be more "Batman & Robin" than "Batman Begins". Ther's a great horror story of studio/producer interference from Kevin Smith here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgYhLIThTvk (laden with profanity and bonus Spanish subtitles).
If not for the plethora of (apparently) quality superhero films coming soon I'd weep for the genre.
