Neil Gaiman and the (naked) Golden Globes
I don't know if anyone else is a Neil Gaiman fan, but he's pretty much one of the coolest writers around. For movie fans, you may recall him as the scribe behind Stardust, Beowulf, and more recently the gorgeous 3-D stop-motion animation kids' movie Coraline. (If you don't know who Gaiman is but would like to know more, here's a recent story on him from the New Yorker, no less...)
As the Noo Yawker puts it, Gaiman is the prolific writer of horror, "fantasy, fairy tales, science fiction, and apocalyptic romps, in the form of novels, comics, picture books, short stories, poems, and screenplays. Now and then, he writes a song."
Gaiman, who was divorced in 2008, just got engaged to Amanda Palmer (who sounds like someone killed off in a Lynchian drama...). She's obviously not a shy girl and is a musician with the punk-cabaret act Dresden Dolls - whatever punk-cabaret is.
On his blog Gaiman said:
"I went to the Golden Globes for Coraline. We lost. But we lost to Up! so no surprise there. Amanda wore a classic 1920s beaded dress with very little underneath it, and nobody noticed me at all. The Golden Globes were interesting. The strangest moment was as we were leaving the NBC party, the photographers grumbled that they hadn't got any photos of us going in, so we agreed to pose for them... and when they complained that Amanda was no longer wearing the amazing beaded dress she'd worn on the Red Carpet, she changed back into it for them (with me holding up a jacket as a makeshift changing area -- the area was deserted but for photographers). They took photographs. (When shot with a flash the dress looks a lot more naked than it did when I was standing next to her.) My favourite bit was that when the photos appeared I was listed as 'and guest'."
That must have been how Prince Charles felt whenever he went anywhere with Princess Diana... the being ignored bit, not the stripping on the red carpet bit...
Ms Palmer was accordingly plastered all over the lovely Go Fug Yourself blog here, which celebrates the fugly fashion happenings in celebrity-ville. Although, at least they knew who Gaiman was ... and loved the dress. (The dress is quite lovely, incidentally. Shame she couldn't find a petticoat to go with it...)
This post would seem to scream out for some "Golden Globes" pun, but frankly, I used that one up on Mariah Carey on Monday's awards blogging and to be honest, if I had a bod like Amanda Palmer, I wouldn't wear underwear either.

I'm a serious Gaiman fan, having read most of his stuff. Still favourite for me is Neverwhere, both the novel and mini-series adaptation.
He also co-wrote Good Omens with Terry Pratchett, the result being a brilliant dark comedy about the anti-christ and armageddon.
Judging from the photos, Ms Palmer is an excellent match for the man (hairy armpits not withstanding).
Great stuff. Hmm... I think I want that dress.
Neil Gaiman is fantastic writer. 'Neverwhere' is the first work of his I read, and it has become one of my favourite novels.
True Margaret, I love that dress as well... Kind of bummed about Gaiman's divorce! On the other hand I like his writing and the dresden dolls so it's a nice combo.
I totally loved Coraline, but apparently they're making a movie out of his graphic novel the wolves in the walls which I cannot wait for! (Can you confirm or deny that btw?)
I've been a rabid Gaiman fan since I was 14. I've never encountered anything by him that was less than completely awesome.
It's sad to hear about his divorce, although having seen his expression in the GFY photos he does seem to be enjoying himself and that's great. I agree with Niri, Amanda seems like a good match for him.
Can you imagine the atrocity that would result from trying to make a film based on the Endless series? A TV show wouldn't do it justice.
I can't even think of anyone who could successfully play Dream, Death, Despair, Desire, Destiny, Destruction and Delerium.
First time I came across him was reading Good Omens..he's very quirky.
That is indeed quite a dress. Long may it continue.
@ Paul #6 - Arrrrrrghhhhhhh! Travesty! Don't even put the idea out there or some idiot ex-top of the pops video director who hollywood has touted as the "next big thing" will be attempting to turn it into an easily digestible love story or something equally horrific (spits in the idea's general direction)
Wow! So cool to find other Gaiman fans out there (and they read my blog!). @Que: There's a musical stage play of Wolves (http://www.improbable.co.uk/show_example.asp?item_id=14) but no film so far.
