How was the tsunami for you?

TsunamiBrightonPierIt was quite exciting turning on the radio on Sunday morning as I was warming up the shower to hear Sean Plunkett's uber-serious tones telling me not to turn the radio off, roll over and go back to sleep. There's a tsunami coming!

Tsunami! Such a cool word. So much more evocative than "tidal wave", somehow. The Japanese drama of it evokes that classic painting of the big wave - you know the one... oh here it is (see below).

Some people headed to the movie theatre yesterday, where you could enjoy a different kind of disaster movie such as Valentine's Day, but not me. When the going gets tough, the tough go mountainbiking in McLean Forest (plus it was a day off). Brilliant stuff - I especially like the newer 5km bit that has lots of jumpity bumps in it. My sister was worried we were a bit close to the Waimakariri River in case the tsunami did actually hit, but her husband reckoned it was unlikely to be a freshwater tsunami...

I was quite impressed by the enterprising couple who headed down to Sumner beach to collect shellfish at the extremely low tide... then there were those who packed up the boat and quite literally headed for the hills.

So, what were you doing during Tsunami Sunday? Heading for higher ground? Heading to the beach? Packing up the surfboards...? (What tsunami?)

I was happily killing thistles in the garden. I first heard about the quake on Saturday night, and the sole news report said no tsunami warning had been issued, so I basically ignored the whole thing. I am 500m up a hill though, and 2.5kms from the nearest beach.

Now I'm less than impressed with that news report since it was totally misleading.

I was driving down the Kaikoura coast. Figured we were okay when the Coastal Pacific train came past going the other way and it didn't have a high tide mark on it.

I went fishing. I was hopeing that the thought of the Tsunami would scare the fish enough to make them want to hop into my boat so I could take them to higher ground.

But alas, no big wave, no fish. So hungry and dissappointed

It was lucky it was low tide, If it was high tide and the water rose 2.5 meters the damage would of been pretty bad to the coast lines due to flooding. If a big wave had happened to wipe out those going out for a look Darwin's theory would be working in our favor.

I'm a bit peeved, to be honest. I live 200m from the sea on the flat in Wellington and I only heard about the warning from a friend sending me a text at 9am (by which time my house could have been underwater). My kids had been watching TV2 since 7am and there was nothing on there to let us know about the warning. I made the executive decision to do nothing, since there didn't seem to be any urgency about getting people to evacuate. It seemed that radio had good coverage, but TV definitely dropped the ball. Civil Defense might want to review its notification systems.

I was worrying about my brother, who lives in Valparaiso.

Yeah i have to agree with Clare, I was shocked the coverage on TV was so shocking. Very little in the way of keeping people informed on what was happening. If it hadn't been for Fox News, which you can only get through Sky, I wouldn't really have known much at all. Crappy TVNZ - up there with Telecom I reckon.
