Losing a Lost Boy

Last updated 10:20 11/03/2010

coreyHaimWhen I heard Corey Haim's name mentioned on the radio news as I was driving to work, I knew it could only mean one thing.

Corey Haim is dead.

Haim dies of a drug overdose. Age 38.

This name may not mean much to people who weren't horomonal teenage girls growing up in the 80s with teen heart-throb pics plastered all over their walls (and ceiling), but Corey Haim was one of the two Coreys.

Corey Haim and Corey Feldman seemed to be everywhere at one point - often together. The Lost Boys, Lucas and License to Drive were all Corey-fied. Corey Haim was the cute one. (Feldman the ugly, funny one.)

The Coreys even had their own reality show for a millisecond (although it never reached these shores) - The Two Coreys (see pic below).

The Lost Boys was one of the first scary-ish films I saw (started a thing for Kiefer Sutherland and boys with earrings...). Meant I couldn't eat rice for a while without squirming.

License to Drive was one of those John Hughes-esque teen comedies that flourished in the 80s. Notable also for co-starring a young Heather Graham. The last big film Haim appeared in was Crank: High Voltage, but there was also a Lost Boys sequel - Lost Boys: The Tribe.

I'm not sure what to feel about the early death of a teen idol. It seems almost inevitable with the recent deaths of Britney Murphy, Heath Ledger et al, that drug overdoses will claim more famous folk before their time.

I often think that fame, especially when it happens young, has a stunting effect on the person's maturity and ability to cope. Turning to drugs as an emotional crutch, twinned with the easy availability of drugs of all types in Hollywood, is an often fatal combination.

Sad on numerous levels.

I thought I would get in quick before the haters. I adored Corey Haim. I am sad that he's died at the young age of 38. I think it's sadder that such a talent (not just cute) was derailed so early in his career. The world of entertainment, by its nature, attracts so many sensitive souls who are often ill-prepared for both flipsides of fame. And once their star starts to descend, the world is not kind. I can totally understand numbing/distancing yourself with drugs.

Firstly, the news reports have given no cause of death of Corey Haim so let's not jump to conclusions.

Especially since one of the deaths that you refer to as being the result of drugs - Britney Murphy - was *not* a drugs-related death.

So (a) let's get our facts right and (b) let's not jump to conclusions.

Thanks.

Lost Boys was a defining film of the 80's. Corey will be missed.

I love him in The Lost Boys as well, I still have my smash hits magazines from 1988 and will be pulling them out tonight, along with a bottle of wine as well! now Im in the mood to watch 80s movies...

I was born in 1985 but I know him from Lost Boys - a decent vamp flick that proves Twilight is twaddle.

Also I have to agree with Allan - drugs is an easy conclusion. Sure, years of cocaine abuse didn't help, but maybe he had a heart attack or something.

I have just ordered from Amazon License to Drive and Dream a Little Dream, already own Lost Boys and will be watching that this weekend. Any true child of the 80's was a fan of Corey Haims. He is the reason I spelt my boyfriend Cory's name wrong for years-Corey Haims way was the ony true way to spell Corey!

This is how I wish to remember Corey. He mad a 10 minute documentary in 1989 right after "Lost Boys" and he was still trying to hold on to his fame. here is the clip:

Don't feel sorry for the dead. He had a good life and went out a good way

When I was in my teens and twenties I was a hell raiser who drunk to excess from Friday night to Sunday.

However, I had a job that I needed to be on the ball for every day so from Monday to Friday I was sober and disciplined. I just let loose in the weekends.

When I hit my thirties I began to slow down but even then it was a slow change – luckily because of the controls I had in place – I had not become physically addicted to alcohol and therefore I was able to make the changes I needed to in my life.

I think there are many people in NZ who have lived like this. But imagine if you didn’t have to get up in the morning and go to work. And you were between the age of 18 to 25 or something. Everyday would potentially be Friday night.

I think these child stars in particular are just like this. They made millions while they were still at school. There friends, and much of their social circle, are rich too. They don’t have to work, they don’t have to get up in the morning and put their game face on. Every night is Friday night and their young and famous. So they do exactly what many kiwi’s do all the time – the only difference is, is that they don’t have the controls in place to keep it in check. They hang in circles were there are piles of drugs and booze but no 9 to 5.

While I was partying but also working, a couple of my mates were constantly on the dole. They didn’t have to get up in the morning and go to work either – and they are self confessed alcoholics to this day.

I didn’t follow him but it’s a shame – 38 is way to young.

A J #9 - Good point, I reckon I'd be the same way if it wasn't for the restrictions (which I'm grateful for) of work
