Outwit, outlast, outplay

Fifteen seasons? Have there really been 15 seasons of Survivor? It seems incredible that the world's biggest reality telly show has been going so long. SurvivorDoes anyone still watch it? Does anyone still care?

Hopefully, they do, because the latest season is really quite good. It's set in China and the new batch of contestants include a poker player, a WWE wrestler, a chicken farmer, a flight attendant, a Christian radio host and - yep - a gravedigger.

He looks a little like Mr Eko from Lost, but I'm still not sure where gravedigging skills would come in handy on Survivor.

Anyway, the reason I'm writing about the show is that Stuff.co.nz will be interviewing each and every contestant as they're eliminated, as well as the winner. The show begins on TV3 this Thursday night, and you can read our interview with the first victim on Friday morning.

We've already done a couple of interviews, and the contestants have been pretty pissed off about being voted off. I don't want to spoil anything, but the first elimination is on YouTube with the headline "best elimination ever". It is pretty funny.

Anyway, it got me thinking about the best and worst reality TV shows. Obviously the worst is There's Something About Miriam, but here are my Top Five reality TV Shows:

1. America's Next Top Model: No show has more cattiness, bitchiness and drama than Tyra Banks and her house full of catwalk clones. The new season starts on TV3 this Friday. Excuse me while I lie on the floor while walking around in a circular motion and screaming "whoop whoop whoop".

2. Laguna Beach: Okay, so this is hardly reality. But it's still bloody entertaining - especially when that prick Jason started dating Lauren on season two. Talk about a bad boyfriend.

3. Hell's Kitchen: With more F-words than a Quentin Tarantino film, Gordon Ramsay turned Hell's Kitchen into a spectacular car crash of bad food, kitchen tension and swearing.

4. My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance: In which an overweight actor embarrassed a money-hungry school teacher by acting more and more outrageously on the way to the altar during their made-for-TV wedding.

5. Survivor: The original reality show has outwitted, outlasted and outplayed everything else to last 15 seasons. Much respect.

Which reality shows do you like, and which ones do you loathe?

I've watched the first 3 eps of the new Survivor China and it's actually pretty decent. I've never been a real fan of the series but this season is good, seems to be a lot more blurred nudity than I remember though....

My Top 5 Reality Shows....

1. The Amazing Race - Year in and year out the most action packed and snakey reality show around. 2. The Ultimate Fighter - 16 angry guys in the same house for 6 weeks as they fight to become The Ultimate Fighter and win a contract with the UFC. I think it's brilliant they KEEP the eliminated people in the house just so they can cause chaos, classic. 3. Treasure Hunters - was only one series but the hick family was TV gold. 4. The Apprentice - Ivanka *swoon* 5. Survivor - in there due to sheer longevity.

I suppose that's the price we pay these days, this kind of rubbish starts getting coverage from the media. Reality TV equals boring, dumb and totally stupid. No wonder people complain about society becoming thicker by the day.

And I suppose if I was going to pick a top five I'd have The Biggest Loser as number one, only because the people competing become much more healthier for their efforts. The rest of the top four will actually be in my worst show list, along with every other Reality TV show especially Big Brother and the Idol shows (y'know American, Aussie, NZ).

Oh if only the Sopranos didn't have to end.

Hey, how did you manage to watch the first three episodes? I tried, but it blocked me cos I was not American?

Anyway, I'm a big fan of Survivor. If you understand the strategy needed to win, you will like the show, and I understand it.

I think the media like to tarnish every reality show with the same brush, which is stupid. Sure, some shows are appalling (Downsize My Pet, anyone?) but others are very well done.

top 5 1. Survivor. no question 2. The Apprentice. Okay it's shite now but the first two seasons were must- see viewing 3. The Amazing Race. Very well done, wins Emmy every year. Kiwi hosting is always good. 4. Solitary. Hasn't screened in NZ, involves competitors been locked in separate chambers and been given tests. Brilliant for analysing the human brain. 5. Hells Kitchen. For pure entertainment value. This show is brilliant.

I'll give my worst now, but I do know who goes first, and it's not the best exit ever, not even close. Judd from Guatemala (I hope you get bitten by a fricken crocodile guys, SCUM BAGS!) is the best.

Worst reality shows:

1. Downsize Me/ My Pet. No, No, No, No. We don't care about fat pets and people. Go to the gym peeps, don't go on TV to be laughed at.

2. Celebrity Treasure Island. Pathetic attempt at Survivor. Put REAL people on the show and make them actually have to suffer and we might see more interest in it.

3. Supernanny. Awful. probably one of the worst shows I have ever seen on TV. Couldn't even make it through one episode.

4. The Bachelor. The most shallow woman to inhibit the earth fight for one super hulk, 24 fail, 1 succeeds for about a month before the hulk dumps her over "commitment' issues. Really shows up what some women want in a man...and it's not pretty at all.

5. Paradise Hotel. Does anyone actually remember this show? The biggest train wreck ever on Fox, but I have to admit it was somehow appealing. I think it was because you realised you were smarter than everyone on the show.

C'mon - after FIFTEEN seasons - how have you not learnt - please don't announce results on the FRONT PAGE of stuff.co.nz. That this is wrong was obvious in the first season when TV3 announced the winner during the news (at that stage it still appeared on TV2). It's not on here just yet (not in NZ) but I still use stuff.co.nz to keep up on my news. A simple "spoiler warning" would be great. Very irritated.

Okay, the worst reality show I have ever seen was on Sat nite on MTV & it was called something like the "Ex-factor" where 2 ex-partners are thrown together in a hotel for a weekend & their new partners secretly spy on them getting up to no good. OMG! The best are: The Amazing race & Survivor... never get sick of them!
