Robert Pattinson has spoken out about the cheating scandal that ended his relationship with Kristen Stewart.

"Shit happens, you know?" he told Esquire UK in a candid interview.

"It's just young people ... it's normal! And honestly, who gives a shit?"

It is the first time the 28-year-old has directly addressed the incident which led to the end his high-profile relationship with Twilight co-star Stewart after photos of her kissing her married Snow White director Rupert Sanders surfaced in 2012.

Stewart publicly and profusely apologised to Pattinson via People magazine.

"This momentary indiscretion has jeopardised the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob," she said. "I love him, I love him, I'm so sorry."

Pattinson, however, skirted around the issue in interviews, even on The Daily Show when host Jon Stewart tempted him with ice cream in a bid to get him to open up.

"The last time I had a break-up, Ben & Jerry got me through some of the tougher times, so I thought you and I could bond over this, and talk about - boy, you are better off kicking her to the curb," Stewart the host said.

"I think you're confused about this show and what the real issues in America are," Pattinson replied.

The actor, who most recently starred alongside Guy Pearce in the Australian drama The Rover, also discussed how he dealt with the intense media and paparazzi interest after he became a tween icon for his role as vampire Edward Cullen.

"I used to dress up my assistant as me, and get him to drive off with, like, five cars following him around for hours," he told Esquire UK. "I think it goes through periods where you're assigned 'this is the guy to follow', but whenever I see a bunch of paparazzi hanging out, I always think, 'Oh god, what have they found out?' Oh, THAT love child! I totally forgot!"

After he and Stewart split, Pattinson reportedly moved in with his Water for Elephants co-star Reese Witherspoon to escape the scrutiny.

"There was a time, three years ago, when I didn't know where to live where I wouldn't be trapped in my home, you know?" he said. "But I worked it out. It's not that big a deal in the end."

Pattinson stars alongside two leading ladies in his new film Maps to the Stars: Australian actress Mia Wasikowska and Julianne Moore. He plays a limousine driver who has sex with Moore in the back of a car while Wasikowska looks on.

"It was the first time I met Julianne and that was the first scene I shot," he said. "It was that part of the scene, too, the sex part."

He also spoke about his nerves, which flared up on set like they did when he attended his final casting for Twilight. He reportedly took too many Xanax pills in preparation for his final interview and arrived drowsy. Nowadays it is his sweat glands that worry him after he began sweating over Moore.

"I remember trying to catch the drops as they fell onto her back," he said. "It was weird. Huge splashing drops. At one point she turned around and said, 'Are you all right?'"
