Miss North Carolina USA Kristen Dalton has been crowned Miss USA 2009.
The 21-year-old aspiring motivational speaker from Wilmington beat out 50 other beauty queens in a live pageant televised from Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
Dalton edged out first runner-up Miss California USA Carrie Prejean, of San Diego, and second runner-up Miss Arizona USA Alicia-Monique Blanco, of Phoenix.
Last year's Miss USA was Crystle Stewart of Texas.
The title comes with a year's use of a New York apartment, a public relations team, a two-year scholarship at the New York Film Academy and an undisclosed salary.
Dalton will go on to compete for the Miss Universe title in the Bahamas in August.

I'm proud of Miss USA for speaking her mind. She's not only beautiful, she is right. This country is in danger of losing it's traditional values. Because of these gay rights, one day it'll pervade our country. It'll be mainstream. These are deeply sad times in my opinion, and it'll only get worse, unless an Ammendment is made quickly to ban gay marriage forever in this country. Unfortunately I don't see a ban happening for at least the 8 years or more. This ban should have been done 30 years ago.
She isn't particularly hot, but I would have thought a more important discussion was on her answer.
I am an advocate for equal rights, and strongly support moves for gay marriage. However, her answer was perfect in my view. She says that everyone has the right to choose, but her opinion is that it is wrong.
She isn't saying that there shouldn't be gay marriage, just that she doesn't agree with it. If people didn't want her opinion, they shouldn't have asked for it.
And as for beauty, most of these pageant contestants are fairly ho-hum and homogenised. I see far more beautiful women around me every day.
I thought the answer by the runner-up was truly inspirational, and clearly showed that she was the winner on the day!! It would have been a tragedy if such an intelligent woman had have ended up winning such a meaningless contest!
Sure she is pretty, has a lovely smile and hair etc, but she looks weirdly/scarily like the contestants that came out before her. Where's the individuality? Blonde hair, blue eyes, perfect teeth and perfect (surely fake) C cup boobs are a bit boring don't you think? I don't really get the concept of Miss America/Miss Universe competitions. When was the last time we heard about the winner using her 'position' in a meaningful way.
I'm a girl!! i think shes hot!! im not a lesbian!! how could anyone say she isnt hot? shes gorgeous, id love to look like that!! you dont need to point out all her fualts, theres a hell of a lot more positives than faults!!
The first runnerup is hotter but she aint bad..
Of Course she is hot; a real beauty. Like you said women must put their own insecurities aside and give compliments when they are due. I am kinda partial anyway being a fellow North Carolinian. Thank you Kristen for being Hot and making us proud!!!!!!
@Steve #27 - Agreed. Although I think it's more the cynical nature of voters on this website, they tend to vote against the trend in most situations I've witnessed. Example (based loosely on an actual poll seen here previously): Millions of voters worldwide vote some well-known Celeb hottest woman of the year - let's say FHM for arguments sake - a poll goes up asking "Hot or Not?", and you can almost guarantee at least half will say Not. Simple question folks! The question is NOT is she the hottest in the world! It is NOT would you let her have your children! It IS: Is. She. Good. Looking. ?.
I'm a brunette man through and through, but James #7 put it best - I wouldn't kick her out of bed for farting.
Would any guys that voted for her not being hot REALLY say no if she propositioned you? Girls, put aside the jealousy for a second; can you not HONESTLY say she is hot or good looking? If you answer in the affirmative to either of those questions, you have some damned high standards.
I think its kind of rediculous that people are saying "any one who says she is not hot is lying or jealous" i know a lot of people who are just not into that look. people have different opinions on whats hot and whats not and they are entitled to that. i voted not hot and i am perfectly willing to admit there are people out there much much better looking then me blonde or not and i am not jealous of them. i just personaly dont find that look attractive
