A New Zealand's Next Top Model contestant is giving up her modelling dreams and changing careers after her bid to become a catwalk queen failed.

Wannabe model Teryl-Leigh Williams-Burke - who made headlines earlier this year because of her massive debt levels - told Woman's Day she wants to become a lawyer after being eliminated from the top-rating TV3 reality show.

She's certainly got enough double-barrelled names to enter the legal game.

"I wanted to try and make my children more comfortable and give them a better life," the 23-year-old solo mother-of-two told WD.

"One day I want to move my kids into a house like (the Next Top Model home). That's why I want to be a lawyer."

Because everyone dreams of growing up in a cliff top mansion surrounded by hair dryers, straightening irons and curling tongs.

Williams-Burke - who is under financial restrictions for the rest of the year because of her debts, which were caused by being young and "naïve" - said her appearance on the show was not indicative of her personality.

""You can ask any of the girls and they'll agree that what they showed on TV is not how it was in real life. It makes a good show - but I am not as mean as I look."

Anyone with hair that good cannot be trustworthy.

Meanwhile, One News presenter Bernadine Oliver-Kerby is preparing for double the trouble - she's pregnant with her second child with hubby Mark Lendrum

She told Woman's Weekly she loves being a mum to 17-month-old Maisey Tess, and is over the moon at finally having her own news to tell people.

"I still can't believe how in love with (Maisey) I am. Every day I catch myself saying to her, 'Do you get sick of mummy kissing those cheeks?'"

If you hear a gurgling sound during the news, don't worry - it's just Oliver-Kerby breast-feeding the girls during the weather. It is the boring part.

Elsewhere, there's good news in store for fans of Stacey Morrison, money, and bags. Classic game show It's in the Bag is making a comeback, with a bilingual twist.

The hit game show - which was hosted by Selwyn Toogood in the 1970s and John Hawkesby in the '80s - is returning to Maori Television on May 31 and will be hosted by Morrison and comedian Pio Terei.

But Morrison is determined not to be a ditzy game show girl.

"Pio is such a modern man. I don't think he'd feel comfortable saying to me, 'You just wear a nice dress, love, and keep quiet'."

Perhaps she could read out historical facts while untying those bags. That'll be thrilling viewing.

Finally, the quote of the week comes from raunchy pop star Katy Perry: "I've taken so many steroids in the past week I feel like I could throw cars like dice, Transformers-style."

Check out the guns on that girl right there.

i usually find this column crap, but read it just to assure myself that im not as lame as the person who writes it - but Teryl-Leigh had no choice about her hairstyle, if your going to stoop that low maybe stuff.co.nz should employ a new writer

Hell if an accused rapist sacked ex Police District Commander can become a lawyer why not a model / solo mum. I say good on you girl. Dont listen to Eden and co about hard work, gotta like what your doing. Thats all crap. Its all about the journey baby. Set yourself goals and go for them...be genuine about reaching for em though dont lie to yourself but at the same time dont worry if you dont reach em just have fun trying.

Hmm, decidedly less caustic than previous weeks. But still funny.

P.S. What the heck kind of name is "Teryl" anyway?

LOL... I love all these comments, better than the actual article most of the time, you all make me laugh! :-)

For those of you having a go @ Teryl Leigh for wanting to become a lawyer, good on ya! NOT! For goodness sake people, is the tall poppy syndrome so bad, that you now jump on people for just saying what they are thinking of doing? So she wants a good career and money for a nice house and raising kids, what is wrong about that motivation, I know plenty of teachers who became teachers because of the holidays!

This poor girl, only shared what's on her mind, and it's not half as bad as some of the awful comments coming from 'commentators'

@ Rebecca, the only character showing, came from YOUR comment! (You sound so bitter and nasty!(did you miss out on the auditions dear? weren't quite up to it perhaps?)

But keep it coming, as I said... it's the best part of this feature.

Did you read the article? "I wanted to try and make my children more comfortable and give them a better life" missed that part possibly?

her motivation is building a better life for herself and her children.

Rebecca   #18   11:48 am May 19 2009

Teryl-Leigh -- surely wanting to make money has to be one of the worst motivations for wanting to become a lawyer. Way to show your 'true' character outside of the 'top model' world.

I'm about halfway through a law degree, and I hope Ms Williams-Burke realizes how much work it is, how much money is involved in financing studies for such a venture, and that it can be a long, hard road before you start making the kind of money she has in mind. More importantly, I don't believe in entering any given profession purely for prospective monetary gain (believe it or not, not all would-be lawyers are in it for the money). Yes, money is a very important part of everyday life, and I really do admire her for wanting to provide for her children. However, from personal experience, it makes such a difference to your work ethic and motivation if you actually enjoy your work and have goals and aspirations other than just making money. I would rather get paid less for doing something I actually enjoy as opposed to doing it just for a job. In saying that though, best of luck to her :)

Hi

I think I have missed a few of these and you used to be able to go back and read the old ones, can you not do that now with the new format??

Thanks.

Joe   #15   11:19 am May 19 2009

I thought you had to be intelligent to be a lawyer?

This is the puerile dribble that makes for journalism in NZ...
