Miss California's new winner Tami Farrell used to bake cookies for pageant owner Donald Trump when she was a teenage beauty queen.
Farrell, who was named Miss California USA after Carrie Prejean was dumped for not fulfilling her contract, cooked Trump cookies when she won Miss Teen USA in 2003.
In her first interview since being crowned, Farrell told Fox News she had a good relationship with Trump.
"I used to bake him cookies and brownies. I've got a good working relationship with Mr Trump. It is always good to have him on your side."
Being told over the phone was a strange way of being crowned the winner of a beauty pageant, she said.
"It was definitely a crazy phone call to receive, but I'm excited to represent the state. It was definitely some interesting news to receive but I'm just so excited."
The 24-year-old wasn't friends with Prejean, she said.
"Unfortunately she and I never really established a relationship or friendship at the pageant but I wish her the best of luck in whatever she does now.
"Everything in life happens for a reason, and I think Carrie won for a purpose. I'm just excited to see what I can do in the next few months of my reign."
Trump and other pageant leaders said Prejean was sacked because she hadn't held up her end of the agreement she signed when she entered the Miss California pageant.
"This was a decision based solely on contract violations, including Ms Prejean's unwillingness to make appearances on behalf of the Miss California USA organisation," the California pageant's executive director Keith Lewis said.
Prejean sparked several controversies after a gay marriage outburst during the pageant. After her win, several topless photos of the model were leaked online.
Farrell said she had several appearances lined up, and planned to work with charities aligned with Miss Universe.

I really don't understand why there is a big fuss over a girl stating her opinion. They asked her opinion on gay marriages and she gave it, it does not have to be the same opinion as everybody else or as the judge who asked the question. I'd hardly call it an "outburst". Freedom of speech!!
GGGGGOD is she ugly! I saw her tonite on Greta and she looked like a cross eyed fool. WOW...she certainly can't hold a candle to the "REAL" Miss California! Too funny. Who is going to watch these pageants??? Nobody I know.
I'm all for articles with pictures of pretty woman.

Describing her comments as an "outburst" places serious questions as to the journalistic impartiality of whoever wrote this. The media are becoming very left wing in my view, and this is a dangerous development. Journalists are supposed to report the news, not make comments on it, or try to influence people's views one way or the other. That should be done by the public who, having listened to or seen an unbiased reporting of an incident, can make up their own minds.
