Nicole Richie and Joel Madden are parents of a newborn baby boy, a son they have named 'Sparrow'.

Sparrow James Midnight Madden is the second child for Richie, 27, and Madden, 30. Their daughter, Harlow, will be two in January.

"In the middle of night, the very early hours of September 9, 2009, Sparrow James Midnight Madden was born to Nicole Richie and Joel Madden," the couple wrote on Richie's website.

"He weighs 7 lbs. 14 oz. Nicole, Joel, Harlow and Sparrow are all doing well. Thank you for all of your good wishes."

Sparrow is the latest strikingly unique name chosen recently by celebrities for their offspring, including Bronx Mowgli (son of Ashley Simpson-Wentz), Apple (daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow), Zuma (son of Gwen Stefani) and Sunday Rose (daughter of Nicole Kidman).

Richie became a clothing and accessories designer after starring with Paris Hilton on The Simple Life.

Madden fronts the band Good Charlotte and runs the DCMA Collective clothing line with his twin brother, Benji.

Honestly, the name is pretty weird, i guess celebrities like to call their kids strange names. I don't get the trend but "sparrow"? hmm.. harlow is nice. But not sparrow.

Well, if anything, it does give a whole new twist on the phrase "Getting up at Sparrow's fart"!

Ofcourse its a big deal what people name their kids, be realistic people - kids will always tease other kids and people will always criticise other people, naming your child sparrow would definitely not be my first choice... Kids grow into their names, what is this kid going to grow up to be after being named after a small brown bird that is at best insignificant to most people other than maybe a few ornithologists.

I Like Harlow, and if I was going to name my kid after a bird I would have atleast made it eagle, or maybe even Kea, but sparrow??!! No way!

The name is terrible.

He's just a BABY! and it was their choice to name him. I like it, it's unique and different and people will never forget him, whether in a good way or bad. I'm sure they put alot of though into it, most parents do i'm sure. and so what if its different? its only a name not the end of the world... Harlow is a beautiful name and Sparrow may be different but its not horrible. I have a Cousin called Rainbow and her younger Brother is Moon Surf - My Aunty is a bit eccentric and Changed her name from Lynn to Yamuna (god knows why) but we love her and they are great kids, people always know who i'm talking about when I mention them as they are unforgettable. so its not that bad a name really, its just different. relax and take it in you stride, we cant change their mind can we, it's the parent decision in the end. and they are the ones who have to live with it.

forgive the name, forgive the parents, even, for they chose it with their own reasons. but how can we forgive the poorly written comments of teachers? i don't care about what you have to say, it's how you say it!
