A Rolling Stone's description of Invercargill has gone down in the annals of rock history, but renovations of the Civic Theatre may have uncovered another connection between the world's greatest rock'n'roll band and the city.

The Invercargill City Council announced in an agenda this week it had found what could be a scrawled inscription by the Stones' lead singer Mick Jagger dated 1965.

It is the same year the band visited Invercargill, when either Jagger or lead guitarist Keith Richards famously describedthe city as "the arsehole of the world".

The council agenda said the inscription, with the words "Mick Jagger 65", was found on a wall in the theatre's band room before the renovations in 2004-05.

The section of wall had been placed into the archives at the Invercargill Public Library, it said.

Wellington auction house Dunbar Sloane auctioneer Bettina Frith said if the inscription was authentic, it could be worth about $200 to $300. If the comments about the city were attached, or signatures from the whole band were there, it would have been worth a lot more, she said.

Council staff denied The Southland Times access to the find and refused to comment before they could make the announcement official today.
