England striker Wayne Rooney has become a father for the first time after his wife Coleen gave birth to a boy.

Kai Wayne Rooney was born Monday at a hospital in Liverpool.

Kai is an unusual choice in Britain, with it ranking 68th in the top 100 names compiled in 2008 by the Office for National Statistics.

In Welsh and Scottish, Kai means "keeper of the keys."

In Hawaii, it means "the sea," while in Maori it translates as food.

The 23-year-old Coleen and Wayne, 24, have been together since they were teenagers.

Rooney may still miss Manchester United's Champions League match against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.

Please do not feed Obzen the Troll any more kai! Whoever you are mate, you're bloody good at the traditional English art of winding people up!

Oh and by the way Obzen, I'm representing the peoples of Eastern Europe in putting forward a Cease and Desist Order about Pita Sharples! How dare he take the name of our favourite bread??? It's SCANDALOUS!

Only Kai I can think of is Kai Hansen, who is a German guitarist and vocalist. Going by other comments, it seems a fairly common German name.

For the record, Obzen is MOCKING Maori. You guys taking him seriously are only fueling him.

@Obzen - Get over yourself. Kai was a welsh/scottish name before it was a maori name. Maori do not have the right to claim words and say other people are not aloud to use them. You are the one being racist against everyone else. I am from New Zealand and I think you are the rude one when you say "We the people of Aoteroa will not tolerate this kind of disrespect." you are one person so dont put this disrespect on the rest of us

Sarkis Zim - Who are you to say that this is sacred in all the other countries if you actually look it up Kai is a quite commen name in all the places you have listed

Aish....woteva obzen... He named his son a Welsh name...if it happens to be the same spelling as our maori language - then handle it boi - so be it! ... geez, can you not accept it being a Welsh/Scottish and Geman word too?

Mlenaie   #42   01:27 pm Nov 04 2009

He's from England not NZ so what does it matter what his name means in New Zealand- I'm scottish and the name is quiet common over there. I doubt the Rooneys have ever been to NZ or even thought about coming here (actually i doubt Wayne could find it on a map). Some ppl take things way to seriously.
