Jennifer Lopez fell on her butt in spectacular fashion while performing her new song at the American Music Awards.

The ceremony was dominated by teen queen Taylor Swift and the late Michael Jackson, but the night will likely be remembered for Lopez falling on her famous behind during a performance of her new song Louboutins.

Lopez was attempting a dance step when she came crashing down, drawing audible gasps from the audience.

She later told Ryan Seacrest in a radio interview that she didn't remember the incident.

"Did I trip a little bit? I don't even remember," Lopez said. "Yeah I meant to do that. What are you talking about? You should know me better than that, that was part of the choreography."

Other action on the night included Keith Urban professing his love for Nicole Kidman and daughter Sunday Rose while accepting one of the night's top honours.

New Zealand-born Urban won the favourite male country artist award, beating Darius Rucker and Jason Aldean.

"To my wife, I just love you so much, baby girl," Urban said in his acceptance speech at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. "This is for you and Sunday."

Kidman sat in the front row and beamed at her husband.

Michael Jackson made history by winning four AMAs, including favourite male artist, bringing his career total to a record 23.

A week after cleaning up at the Country Music Awards in Nashville, 19-year-old Swift scooped the top categories at the AMAs with five wins including beating Jackson for the most coveted trophy of the night, favourite artist.

"To even be mentioned in a category with Michael Jackson, who we will miss and love forever, is an unimaginable honour," Swift, who accepted the top prize via satellite from London where she is on a concert tour, said.

Swift was also named favourite female pop/rock, favourite female country artist, and favourite adult-contemporary artist while her album Fearless won favourite country album.

She is such a beautiful woman, but that outfit does not flatter her. She looks most fetching in her elegant long-dresses, especially fishtail style. Madonna called and she wants that hideous thing JLo was wearing back. Oooh, ugly from every angle.
