Acclaimed American musician Ben Harper said he had lost track of time since arriving in Queenstown four days ago, as he adjusts to a "more humane and less nomadic" pace of life.

Fresh off a tour of the United States, Australia and New Zealand as a support act to Pearl Jam, Harper said he was taking a week out in Queenstown with actress wife Laura Dern and two of his four children.

Leaping off the Shotover Jet yesterday, he told staff he had just taken "the best ride ever".

The family had also been hiking and taken a helicopter into the mountains, and had shopped downtown in Queenstown.

Harper picked out Sam Neill's vineyard, Two Paddocks, for special praise, describing it as a "wonderful, beautiful" place.

The Grammy award-winning artist said he would head back to the United States this weekend to attend a gala dinner at the White House honouring Bruce Springsteen.
