Authorities say actor Charlie Sheen, star of the hit sitcom Two and a Half Men, has been accused of using a weapon in an alleged case of domestic violence in Aspen.
Sheen, 44, spent part of Christmas Day in jail after being arrested at a home in the Colorado ski resort town.
Police spokeswoman Stephanie Dasaro did not provide details on what kind of weapon Sheen is accused of using.
Sheen also was arrested on investigation of second-degree assault, a felony, and criminal mischief, a misdemeanour.
Sheen's lawyer didn't return a telephone call Sunday seeking comment.
Sheen hasn't been charged and was released on Friday after posting an $US8500 (NZ$12,040) bond. Prosecutors will determine whether to file charges.
Police did not identify the person whom Sheen was accused of assaulting. But various websites have said Sheen shoved his third wife, Brooke Mueller, during a heated quarrel.
TMZ reported that Mueller had been drinking heavily when she dialled 911 about 8.30am, and subsequently recanted her allegations against Sheen.
A spokeswoman for the Aspen Police Department declined to comment on the TMZ report, as did prosecutor Arnold Mordkin, the head of the district attorney's office in Aspen.
Sheen's Los Angeles-based spokesman, Stan Rosenfield, declined comment except to say: "Don't be misled by appearances. Appearances and reality can be as different as night and day. It would benefit everyone not to jump to any conclusion."
Sheen and Mueller, 32, married in May 2008. The former actress and real estate agent gave birth to twin sons in April of this year.
Sheen is the son of actor Martin Sheen, former star of the hit TV drama The West Wing. His brother is actor-director Emilio Estevez.
Sheen has two daughters by his second wife, actress Denise Richards. Their four-year marriage ended in 2006 in a bitter divorce that titillated the tabloids for months.
Sheen, whose film credits include Platoon and Wall Street, is best known for his starring role as a wealthy, womanizing Malibu bachelor on the bawdy CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men, one of US television's top-rated shows.
