Jason Alexander, the former star of 1990s hit television sitcom Seinfeld, has joined the ranks of celebrities working with weight control company Jenny Craig to lose weight in the new year.

Alexander, 50, joins the ranks of Valerie Bertinelli, Queen Latifah and others who have worked with Jenny Craig to lose weight and promote the company's programs and products.

"It's always been the same old story," Alexander said in a statement about his previous attempts at dieting.

"The first 10 pounds were gone in a jiff, but then Bamm! Back again, and this time, they're back with a vengeance - they even brought friends."

Alexander, who played Jerry Seinfeld's sidekick George Constanza on the top-rated sitcom, said he realised last fall while taping a Seinfeld reunion that he put on more weight than he wanted. His goal is to lose 13.6 kilograms.

Patti Larchet, chief executive for California-based Jenny Craig, said the company expects Alexander will inspire other men to lose weight.

Along with Seinfeld, Alexander has starred in numerous TV shows, films and on Broadway. He is now starring in a one-man stage show The Donny Clay Experience that opens in Las Vegas in February.

Jenny Craig, one of the world's largest weight control companies, designs exercise programs and provides food that help people lose and manage their weight.
