Mariah Carey has admitted having "splashes of champagne" before her loony acceptance speech at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
Carey, who appeared dazed and incohent while accepting her Breakthrough Artist award for her role in Precious, gave a long, rambling acceptance speech at the awards on Wednesday and punctuated it with bouts of crazed giggling.
At the People’s Choice Awards, where she was named favourite R&B artist, Carey jokingly blamed her performance on presenter and Precious director Lee Daniels.
"The thing is me and Lee hadn’t see each other in a long time, and then he was presenting my award, so he starts off immediately with inside jokes," Carey said backstage at the People’s Choice Awards, where she was named favourite R&B artist.
"We had splashes of champagne, and I love Lee but he's a bad influence," the singer said.
The 39-year-old says she was rushing to receive the honour and didn't eat enough. She also says people shouldn't take the speech too seriously.
"If people don't understand me and think I'm just like this girl that stands by a microphone and sings Hero, then they're definitely not going to get me," she explained.
"But if people knew me better, they would understand I have a sense of humour, and basically that's what gets me through life."
During the speech, Carey rambled on about various topics, including meeting one of the night's other honorees, Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren.
A full minute before Carey and Daniels finally left the stage, the audience had begun to applaud them off.
Carey didn't return to the stage but her presence was felt for the remainder of the night.
Before handing out a music award, actor Sean Penn quipped, "Think anything's going to make YouTube tonight?"

Isn't Mariah Carey pregnant? Maybe she shouldn't be drinking.
Mariah Carey is, and always will be my most fav singer of all time.
you go girl, get drunk and splash yourself with champagne, and don't listen to those Sean Penn silly-billys tryin' a bring you down
The same attitude on "americans are so uptight" and "what's wrong with being drunk?" is a typical NZ thing. No wonder now it's been revealed women are at much more risk than men when drunk. It's more than MC being drunk, it's a whole stupid attitude about drinking yourself till you're wasted. Please note there's a huge difference between being drunk and enjoying yourself. Don't care about her, but she made me laugh because like many people I see getting drunk, it's all they can do.
Americans are so uptight about drinking...she was drunk...she didnt flash anyone, pash anyone inappropriate, swear or make stupid comments or spew in front of the cameras. And she didn't later say she was suffering from exhaustion or some anti-hayfever medication like all the other in-denial stars do...what has she done wrong exactly?
mariah who? who the hell cares?! just another boring 'celeb' news item.
How sad that nobody stopped her from goin on stage drunk! I pray she be surrounded by caring and supportive people in the future.
I know id be more boozed than that if i was at an awards ceremony with free grog.
WHO CARES IF SHE WAS TIPSY ... SHE CAN DO WHAT SHE WANTS... U GO MAMMA

Big deal, so she had a few drinks, whatever. She was very real and very endearing--not to mention, an amazing and dedicated actress. Who should judge?
