Photographer Annie Leibovitz is the latest to issue an apology over the semi-topless picture she took of Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus.

The world-famous photographer - who caused massive controversy with the picture she shot for the cover of Vanity Fair magazine, which shows 15-year-old Cyrus posing in just a blanket - insists the portrait has been "misinterpreted".

She said: "I'm sorry that my portrait of Miley has been misinterpreted. Miley and I looked at fashion photographs together, and we discussed the picture in that context before we shot it.

"The photograph is a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little make-up, and I think it is very beautiful."

Meanwhile, The Christian Coalition of America are asking The Disney Channel - who broadcast Hannah Montana - to reprimand Miley for agreeing to the provocative shots.

Michele Combs, a representative for the CCA, said: "Miley should say it was a mistake and that kids have to be very careful at such a young age. Kids look up to her. Something needs to be done."

Combs added the group want Miley to make an apology during a televised press conference, adding: "Annie Leibovitz has a reputation for doing racy things. Miley should have thought this out before she agreed to go in front of Annie."

However, Jamie Lee Curtis - who recently caused controversy when she posed topless on the cover of AARP magazine - has defended the singer-turned-actress, saying she should have been better protected by her guardians.

She wrote in a blog on The Huffington Post website: "I too was a little embarrassed by my recent topless 'scandal' and the subsequent parodies, but I am an adult woman. I protected myself during the shoot and I can take the heat.

"I only wish that her guardians had protected her."
