An animal rights group has spoken out against a magazine cover shoot in which pop star Lady Gaga poses in a bikini made entirely of meat.

Gaga posed in the outlandish outfit for the cover of the latest edition of Vogue Hommes Japan under the headline, "The Naked Truth".

Ingrid Newkirk, the president of animal rights group Peta, was reported by Digital Spy as saying people should avoid putting meat "on or in your body".

"Lady Gaga's job is to do outlandish things, and this certainly qualifies as outlandish because meat is something you want to avoid putting on or in your body," she said.

"No matter how beautifully it is presented, flesh from a tortured animal is flesh from a tortured animal. Meat represents bloody violence and suffering, so if that's the look they were going for, they achieved it."

Peta regularly use celebrities to promote their causes, and stars like Pamela Anderson and Eva Mendes have posed nude for poster and billboard campaigns.
